24 frames per second: new movie thread
«

the other one was back on the second page and had 22 pages, so what the hell, time for a new one.
i just saw "marty". holy shit. that's one of the best movies i've ever seen in my life. maybe it's just because (other than marty still living with his mom) it pretty much describes my life, but still. incredible. i'm gonna have to buy that movie on dvd. i really need to watch it like 20 more times.

have you ever seen the john candy movie "only the lonely", from the late 80s? it's really quite similar to "marty". i have to wonder if it isn't an homage. "marty"s way better, but "only the lonely"s pretty decent in its own right.

Does "Only the Lonely" feature a song with the chorus "It's just a ga-ame that only the lonely can play-ay" with some odd chord progressions? That plays three times a day at my store? If so I need to see it.

haha lastclearchance you've seen right through me. yes, i did. also, i've been meaning to see it for years.
and by the way, the scene with marty and his mom that shows up for a second in "someone to eat cheese with" KILLED ME*. i now have a burning desire to sample the dialogue from that scene on a record. if i ever sing for a band again, it'll happen for sure.
*--and not in the sense that i found it amusing, either. it was gut-wrenching. i definitely cried.

One thing I saw lately was Harmony Korine's new movie, Mister Lonely, which had a whole six-day run before it headed to the $3 theater. No one who hates his earlier work will likely be swayed by this, but it's a sort of kinder, gentler version of him, with a colony of celebrity impersonators intercut with Werner Herzog playing a priest with flying nuns. There are some moments of beautiful imagery, but it doesn't add up to much, and those looking for the abrasiveness of Gummo or julien donkey-boy will probably be bored. I liked it in a very muted way. Adding to the experience was a Mexican family in the theater who let their small children run around the aisles and engaged in loud conversations during the film (Gaby said they were discussing how bored and confused they were by the film); this seemed to piss off many patrons, but I actually found it pretty consistent with Korine's aesthetic (plus, as critical as I am of people who laugh at older horror films, I'm not sure there's much ground to stand on when it comes to bitching about people's behavior in the damn three-dollar theater).

Oh yeah, and since one scene in Mister Lonely made Gaby wipe a tear from her eye, in a failed attempt at concealment that was so cute I practically melted, I got Splendor in the Grass just in the hopes that she'd get sniffly again. Except it failed; I was clenching my face muscles at the end even though I've seen the fucking thing before, while she was all, "eh, what's so special about Warren Beatty anyway?"

my lady has. and she recounted portions of the plot to me in a manner similar to if she were speaking about her actual girl friends. i was kind of disturbed by it. anyways, she liked it...but that's not saying much as she was a fan of the series.
i really enjoyed reading the ny times scathing review of it though.

Has anyone seen/heard of a Norwegian movie Reprise? I bought a ticket for it the other day at the local theatre because I felt awful and wanted to disappear, but didn't go. Should I try again? Does anyone else go to the movies when they do something wrong and can't escape their shame?

Watching the new Casino Royale. So far it's reasonably pleasing. There's some definite visual interest, it's good to see so many well composed frames.

So yeah, Casino Royale... astonishingly good considering the past 10 or so Bond movies. I gotta say, I'm excited for the next one. Craig seems to be the Bond franchise's Christian Bale and it's good to see.

I am utterly unable to understand how anyone in their right mind can tolerate, let alone enjoy,
Sex and the City
(one episode was enough to make me hate it forever, so it also could be that I had the bad luck to catch a particularly horrible episode, but I'd be surprised). If anyone feels inclined to mount a convincing defense of that show/movie, I'd be curious (and impressed!)

It's not for all ladies. It's mainly for ladies who wish they were overprivileged yuppies living out the fantasies of a middle-aged gay man.

I've watched a few episodes of Sex And The City, and it's enjoyable in the same way that House is. It's always the same plot, with the same broad characters, and nothing changes, nothing's really interesting, but it's comforting in the way it repeats itself with tiny, slightly novel iterations in each episode.
Mainly, I think both shows succeed because they're well-constructed, and the characters are juuuuust barely edgy enough to allow the home viewer to think "Yeah, that's probably what I would be like if I was a crippled yet secretly-good-hearted doctor / horrible consumerist mid-30s single girl in NYC."
I haven't seen the Sex and he City movie though because god damn it Miranda should not be getting a divorce that dude was perfect for her and the father of her child besides.

I think like 90% of all film majors start out this way.

Ahem.
Sex and the City
is also for the ladies who like impressively stupid puns. I'm passing on the movie, though, cuz Samantha is really mean to Miranda in the trailer and
Iron Man
already met this month's Black Best Friend quota.
