The only Sex and the City I saw was dubbed, come to think of it, so "stupid puns" is potentially the most convicing argument in its favour I've read so far

to be fair to iron man, he had a black best friend in the 70s when such a thing was vaguely edgy.

Ahem. Sex and the City is also for the ladies who like impressively stupid puns.

this is exactly what i was gonna say! (except for the "ladies" part of the sentence) the puns! and they're not stupid they're awesome! and the rest of show is really fun too. you dudes are just being negative nancys.

I recently watched The Savages, Into the Wild, and Away from Her. I was already a bit down, and this triple feature is enough to turn Mickey effing Mouse into a baritone. All good, all very sad.

I watched Culloden last night!  Not bad, although the dripping derision in the narrator's voice got to be a bit much after a while.

"These... are the Scots.  A filthy, ragged, cruel people locked in a vicious system of human bondage."
"These... are the English.  A horrible, inhuman, sadistic people who committed the greatest war crimes this land has ever known."
"This... is the moor.  A filthy, grimy, unwelcoming terrain that probably masturbates while thinking about your mother."

Still, a pretty good movie; its fake-documentary style focuses mainly on the ways in which the soldiers were pawns for aristocrats who suffered incredibly little in comparison, rather than giving an hindsight-saturated overview that talks about armies as unified ideological forces.

Anyway, the War Game is packaged on the DVD as well, so I'll probably watch that in a bit.

I saw the Japanese movie Machine Girl this evening.  It was okay, I suppose; mostly it just made me want to film a remake that takes place in an American trailer park.

Seriously? The trailer made it look pants-wetteningly awesome.

It had a lot of awesome bizarre bits, and it's not like it was bad, exactly; what kind of movie could be when the villainness unleashes her drill bra at the end, and says "This is my drill bra!"  and then, after using it, asks, "How do you like my drill bra?"

It just seemed a little slapped-together.  Kind of uninteresting shots, kind of a long time taken to set up the backstory.  There was a lot of the movie where I was like, "Yes yes, this is all well and good, but when are we going to see Machine Girl do something machiney again?"

Three really good films, some of the best from last year (maybe not Into the Wild, which was good but the other two shine), and despite their unarguable sadness I'm pretty sure that watching them altogether would delight me.

I mean Into the wild is one of those movies where it's so bad that you make up stupid scenes while watching it like "haha, it could have a scene where the hero jumps aboard a moving train and King Of The Road plays in the background" and then two minutes after you imagine it it actually happens. Or that scene were the camera circles around the hero for two minutes while he is shouting on top of his bus

Well I liked it. And when it comes to that scene, and the others like it which seemed so overly goofy and smelt of "Woohoo cinematic styling showing independance and freedom, look how awesome this kid is!" I saw as just showing how self-satisfied and smug the kid was (not to say he didn't have less annoying characteristics), but I can see how they'd be viewed as stupid.

I suppose you might be right - from what I read there is little doubt that Sean Penn did not completely identify with the character though - and he doesn't come across as some one who would be intently goofy about that kinfd of thing

But since I saw it six months ago already I forgot most of it anyway.. I just remember being really disappointed with the way he treated an otherwise fascinating story!

It's true, as much as I like the guy as an actor, he does take himself kinda seriously to be intently goofy. Heres to giving undeserved credit!

I really like him as an actor, too, for the record! I just don't think he should be allowed on the other side of a camera anymore.

I take it you weren't a fan of Indian Runner, the Crossing Guard or the Pledge. I thought the first was excellent, the second pretty average, and the third has veered in my estimation from wonderful to absurd.

I must admit I only have Into the Wild as evidence to back my last dramatic recommendation. Haven't seen any of the others, though now you've got me a bit curious.

In case it drives that curisosity, I will say that all three of those dealt with adults, often life beaten and occasionally bitter, messy and contradictory adult men (in their thirties in the first fim, in their forties in the second, and in his sixties in the third), whilst Into the Wild dealt with an uppity kid. I don't suppose that means much beyond you may decide that Penn's better at dealing with adult frustration then youthful idealism.

Into The Wild made me want to go and be out in the woods or in the sea or something, and I quite enjoyed it, though at points it got slightly tedious and felt too long. But it wasn't baddd.
