at first sight, I thought that movie was called the Oprahnage, and i had begun forming scathing remarks about it in my head before I convinced myself to reread the title. i was then saddened and frustrated that the movie i was reviewing in my head didn't exist.

there was a time (a time when i was living with my brother) when i'd get addicted to a movie or a couple of movies and just watch it/them over and over. every time someone said "shall we watch a movie" i'd be reaching for that particular movie before they'd finished speaking, and all my friends would hate me and nobody would come see me because i'd just make them watch some shitty movie and i wouldn't care because me and my brother would just sit around on the couch every afternoon and watch that same movie, then go find some food.
okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but not much. anyway, what i wanted to say is that it's not happened in a while but now it seems that i'm getting that way with
superbad
. i'm afraid i might lose my girlfriend if it gets worse so i'm going to impose a two week ban and see if i can make it through.

we watched romance & cigarettes last night and it was actually really good. the ending managed to make me tear up, which lately isn't a surprise but still.

I really love that film. It's pretty bonkers and over the top, but given the genre it's coming from that's hardly suprising. I think the wholeheartedness of the entire cast really makes it work, they've all clearly decided to get stuck in and that really shines through.

it's weird because the only information i'd seen on it at all came from a small thing in the la weekly. it was really awesome though, to the point of where i'd actually buy it instead of importing it via mexico.

So, has anyone seen this new
Harlan Ellison Documentary
? I read the guy pretty obsessively back in high school, so I can pretty much predict what the experience would be like... but I'm still really interested.

He was just on Studio 360 talking about it. Sounded pretty sweet but I guess it's getting a really limited release.

I haven't seen it, but a co-worker of mine did, and he liked it a lot. He's a real smart, level-headed guy, and I usually trust his recommendations, so there's that.

Oh, I saw
I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With
. I'd seen it on the store shelf, and hated the title, the description on the box, and the preview I saw. All signs pointed to it being hell of terrible. But Wally and TSKS both gave it a high recommendation, so I rented it. The whole time I was at the checkout counter, I was sorta gritting my teeth, thinking, "Well, if I hate this Sarah-Silverman-laden monstrosity, I'll at least be able to vent my spleen about it to Andrew and Wally.
As it turns out, they were right; that was a really, really wonderful little movie. Between the fatguy/hotchick pairing, the "I gotta lose weight to get my life together" plot, the fact that it was a movie written by an actor about a guy trying to make it as an actor, and the heavy referentiality towards other films, there were like a million ways the movie could have gone terribly, self-obssessedly wrong. But no, it sidestepped them all, it was lovely and small and charming, realistic without taking itself overly-seriously or lacking in a sense of consequence. Funny in a lot of little quiet ways. I was expecting something like
King of Queens
, but it felt more like
Peanuts
. I liked it a great deal.
