but I guess in 1986 the sight of a Nazi-infused gay s/m relationship that culminates in the face-fucking of a dying old man who's been yanked out of his iron lung as he gasps for breath was apparently too much for some people.

UGH. Philistines!

I don't see how that's possible. There must be some other reason.

re: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
The scene leading up to the one you're talking about is the one I can't let go of. If I were Gabita, no way would I have ever allowed anyone to help me with that*, but if I were Otilla? I like to think I'm there for my friends, but man, I just don't know.

Just writing here to note that I have in fact been bleeding in the middle of a street, and my answer when asked if I needed any help was indeed "no, I'm fine".

See, this is all very interesting as I believe my response, were I bleeding in the street, would probably be along the lines of "OMFG CALL A FUCKING AMBULANCE WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ASSHOLES WAITING FOR??!!?>?!?!?!?!"

My friend Diane claims that it's because I'm a Virgo that I feel like I can take care of everything by myself and don't need any help ever, but that I also feel like I can take on everyone else's problems because surely, they need help. I think she's mean.

I remember one time when I was bleeding in the middle of the street, a lady asked me if I wanted a moist towelette.  I also said no I'm fine.

The most recent time I lay bleeding in the street, my brother was with me, and he told me not to move. I said, "No, I'm fine," and I got up and was in horrible pain but luckily nothing was actually broken.

The time before that there was no one around but had there been I surely would have said, "Please, call me an ambulance, right now."

Wow. I feel like I'm missing out because I've never been bleeding in the street. I'd wager it's probably due to my lack of biking, although I have been nearly run over by bikers on several occasions while walking.

Whit, there's a huge Jess Franco retrospective at the Cinémathèque in Paris. I'm sad you're not around, because then that would surely motivate me to take a weekend to go check out some of these films. As it is, I have way too much work and have no Paris trips planned in the next future.

Oh man, that's too bad--I was going to mention this about a month ago and urge you to go! I'm quite in awe of it, myself, and I wonder if it will precipitate a critical revaluation of Franco beyond those of us who are already obsessed with the man (which maybe seems unlikely on the surface, but then filmmakers like Sam Fuller and Edgar Ulmer--not to mention Douglas Sirk--were only later rescued from marginalization among the tastemakers).

If you do for any reason go, I recommend Les Gluotonnes (July 22), Le Miroir Obscene (July  20), and--probably his signature film--Venus in Furs (June 21). Also Les Nuits Brulantes de Linda on July 28, because I can't find a copy of that in the U.S.

Not wanting to lower the tone from the old man face-fucking, but last night I watched "the Aristocats" again, and I laughed and enjoyed it like I was five years old and seeing it for the first time. I also turned on the spanish subtitles so I could pretend it was part of studying, which was actually useful. quieren todos ser un gato jazz!

well, on the topic of reliving youthful pleasures that don't involve facefucking, just watched Rambo: First Blood Part II. The real surprise wasn't how morally reprehensible it was ("do we get to win this time" my ass), but how plodding it was. I think the fourth one might have retroactively set the bar too high, since 2 & 4 are basically the exact same film. Except they forgot to bring back Frank Stallone's stupefying closing-credit ballad "Peace in Our Life" for 4.

oh wow, ten seconds after posting that, I went and discovered this, in which some genius rectifies the oversight.

More to the point, though, really, mad props to Criterion for restoring Blast of Silence. I'd long wanted to see this 1961 existentialist pulp-noir film about an Ohio hitman strolling NYC at Christmastime while waiting to do a job, and it met my hopes--the thing is as bitter as Detour, with insanely hardboiled second-person narration ("you hate parties . . . you want a woman, buy one. In the dark, so she won't remember your face." I also liked the description of one guy as having "a moustache to hide the fact that he has lips like a woman. The kind of face you hate." Lots of hate in the movie, really--it's sort of like Le Samourai but with Travis Bickle), and an incredible gritty allure. A neat bonus feature also retraces the film's steps and shows how the locations have changed since then.

Wow, that sounds good. Queued.

I saw a documentary about Joy Division called Joy Division (clever!). It was ok. I think I like hearing the music better than hearing the story again. The dvd has an hour or so of clips that weren't in the film. Most of them should have been in the film. I see that as a problem with editing.

That was the only thing that made me mad about the movie:  "That doesn't work!  That's just not scientifically possible!  I woulda been eating people LONG ago if it worked!"

That aside, though, I absolutely loved that movie.

Me too. Especially the music.

We watched the Onion movie last night. It's on par, I understand from what my friends told me, with the Underground Comedy Movie. It's hard to believe that two people who actually wrote for the Onion turned out such a lousy piece of shit.

I may have told this story before, but I was talking about Ravenous with a friend who's a big film studies dude.  I'd just picked up the soundtrack, and I'd been telling everyone I knew about how great it was.  "The music's fantastic!  It was all composed by Damon Albarn and some other guy."

Anyway, the soundtrack comes up in conversation, and my friend's like, "Have you heard the soundtrack?  It's amazing!  It was put together by Michael Nyman and some other guy."

Really? You guys liked it? It failed at being funny, and it failed at being scary.

I thought it was genuinely funny and creepy at points, though the creepiness was mostly a product of the score. It had some delightfully weird scenes, I mean weirdness akin to several scenes in Southland Tales, that kind of unrepentant in your face bizarre. I dunno, it didn't reinvent the wheel (or the cannibal movie) but I thought it was pretty fun.

Fuck, man.  I turned this shit within 15 minutes, it was so terrible.  I really want to call someone and get my money back for renting that piece of shit.  If it were anything else ok the joke's on me for renting something without checking it out, but fuck this is supposed to be the onion, that ought to constitute some sort of implied warranty that a person of my demographic would at least get a fucking chuckle out of that shit.
