what is rhetoric there?  is it like a public speaking class?

You sound way cooler than my public speaking teacher in college--she couldn't speak english!  You could talk about whatever you wanted and she had no idea!

yeah, it's basically how-to-write-an-essay with a little bit of public speaking thrown in at the end.

I went into my learn-how-to-write-an-essay class pretty skeptical because I knew how to write an essay, especially after I saw how retarded the rest of the class was.  But I actually got a TON out of it, and my random grad student taught me a lot.  What I'm trying to say is: teach the dumb kids what you have to teach them, but make it engaging for the smrt kids too.

I was thinking about going to med school today, but I'd have to take 27 credits of science courses first, with undergraduates, and I'd probably shoot myself.

a friend of mine who's a computer engineer is doing this.  which means he does have to sit through chemistry classes with ASU freshmen, and watch them get really emotional in response to text messages in class.

I generally recommend to people that they not go to med school unless they want to devote 7+ years to stress, sleep deprivation, and poverty.

And I only see the Junior med students through fellows.

Become a nurse practitioner or a physician's assistant.  No, you won't have the money or the prestige, but you can still do pretty cool stuff and help people medically.

I'm thinking the same thing, but the thing turning me off is not having to take classes but what kadie described. Though I am a dick and more interested in research than helping people.

I've never had a problem with the people in my classes really, but I have a real hatred of labwork. This is the reason I didn't major in science or pre-med.

My friend Cheryl is going into neurobiology. She straight up wants to be a brain surgeon. I think she's smart enough to do it, but BOY does it seem like a lot of work.

In that case, why not just get a PhD and not an MD?

I considered at points the MD route, but since I'd be going for a specialty in psychiatry, it would be a lot of years of hell. Clinical psych PhD from start through internship is only about 5-6 (though then you need a 1-2 year post-doc of some sort). Also, there's no debt for tuition involved, since the programs are funded. (Of course, you don't end up with the earning potential of an MD, but whatever.) And there's no surgery, and it turns out I'm ridiculously squeamish about that, even though I can handle dissection.

i am starting my PhD program in neuroscience right now. i also prefer research to working with people directly ...rats and fruit flies are less stressful to tinker with than real live humans. i am not squeamish, but having people's lives in my hands is nothing i'm interested in. yes, my undergrad science courses were hellish, but i'm glad i stuck it out.  i've pretty much known i've wanted to be a scientist since elementary school, and a neuroscientist since high school. if i purposefully chose a different career path, i think i would hate myself.

(i've always wanted to make music, though, so i'm hoping i can get that going on the side.)

See I would love to have people's lives in my hands. Plus I was joking when I said I didn't want to help people--I'd very much like to work with people directly, and I think I'd find straight lab work pretty boring.

Taking science classes isn't much of an obstacle for me--I've never taken any chemistry or biology and would really like to. Only problem right now is I don't think I could afford it, let alone med school and all the chaos that comes with residency etc, so it's just something kicking around it my head at the moment.

If you want to have people's lives in your hands why not just become a supervillain

I mean you only need a master's and the hours are way better
