We should also mention
My Arms, Your Hearse
, the one before
Blackwater Park
. I lost interest after those two, which were the ones that gave Opeth widespread attention.

Man, you guys can go on listening to Opeth, but after I really liked them for a few months back in 2002 I've never felt the urge to listen to any of it ever again.

I had a similar period in 2005 I think. Still Life is what really ended it for me. There's good stuff on that album I guess, but you have to listen to the same boring riff repeated like 800 times to get to any of it. Fuck that.

Opeth was the first band I listened to with death vocals. They were my favorite band for around 2 years when I was in highschool. Back then I would have told you Blackwater Park was my favorite. Looking back I prefer any of the first 3 and Deliverance. Deliverance by no means is one of their best albums...but I enjoy it for it's faults just as much as its success. But over all, My Arms Your Hearse is the best thing they've done. It's middle enough in their career to capture the band most accurately, is some romantic concept album of sorts, has their killer set closer, "The Amen Corner".
I used to play people "When" for the shocking beginning of the song. I loved to see their reactions.

i like their grooving stuff the best, and it seems they were doing that mostly from
blackwater park
through to
ghost reveries
. the new one hasn't grabbed me, but i didn't expect it to. martin lopez was one of my favorite drummers.

Oh fuck, I need that Embarrassment album. The one from 1990 that I have is pretty damn good, but from what little I've heard of their late 70s/early 80s output, it doesn't hold a candle to that stuff.

Mudhoney – Plays "Hate The Police" (Plus 3 More Songs They Never Want To Play Again, Ever!) 12" EP
Man, I've been keeping an eye out for this record since I was 15 or some shit. In great condition. One more gap plugged.

Fuckin nice! I remember talking about that record with you on here a few weeks ago. Good score.
Also, I got the records you sent me today, but I'm temporarily without a needle so it'll be a couple weeks before I can tell you what I think of them. Oh well.

Bummer dude. I was looking forward to hear what you thought of The Karate Party LP. I hate it when needles fuck out. Pisses me off no end.

Hah, yes, it is horrific. Once I was playing a record--Rolling Stones, "More Hot Rocks", in fact; it was right in the middle of "Sitting On A Fence", I'll never forget--and all of a sudden the needle just scraped across the entire rest of the side and sat there on the label, hissing loudly. I was like "OMG" and ran over to see what had happened, and I discovered that the point of the needle had broken clean off, and was still sitting in the groove that had been playing when it broke. It was kinda crazy.
This one didn't totally die like that, though. It's just that I was using a borrowed needle/cartridge setup because I need to replace the piece between the needle and the tone arm. It was borrowed by my roommate--he was borrowing the record player from a friend, and he stopped using it so I borrowed the cartridge from that record player--and he needed to give it back to the friend he borrowed it from. So yeah, gotta wait til I can replace the part I need, which will be next Friday when I get paid. Then I can listen to the records.
Believe me, I'm also looking forward to hearing them.

A friend was up from Wellington for the night and brought me records:
LP
Nice Face - I want You 7"
Dead Luke - Record One 7".
Both 7"s are notable for some stunning Mike Sniper artwork.

I like this, though I have no idea about the band at all. But I can't help wondering, do Nice Face always have a nice face on their covers? Y'know, bit like The Smiths.

Darkthrone - Frostland Tapes
Don't let the aesthetic fool you, these are demos from when they were still a death metal band, just before they switched over to their fates-altering black metal. I'll report back.

My friend Rob Deicide has that first Darkthrone LP, "Soulside Journey" or whatever it's called, and it's pretty fucking good, so that might actually be a really worthwhile purchase. Especially since they're demos and will sound more like "Transilvanian Hunger" than "Soulside Journey" does.

I'm listening to the first one, and yeah, it' not very death metal at all. Very primitive and very necro, but hey, I'm a Darkthrone fan, aren't I?
Oh wait, the third demo ('Cromlech') just started, and that's more like what I was expecting: recognisably death, 1989 so much more like 'Scream Bloody Gore' covered by teenagers than anything hypertechnical you'd find in the genre today.

Dudes, Darkthrone's
Cromlech
demo rocks! It'll rip your tits off! Awesome!
This set is the first music I've bought in over 2 months - and what a way to break my drought!
