I just bought:
Mono- Gone 3 LP set
Mono- Memorie dal Futuro 10"
Envy- All The Footprints... LP

I just found out that Envy and Thursday are going to do a split album, which got me listening to Thursday for the first time since I was a freshman in high school.  Good times.

What's this like?  I have his first CD Hard Again, which I really like, and I've contemplated getting more.  Someone else - Bubbachups? - got the one you got recently, and here it is again.  Worth picking up?  Different from Hard Again?

Or maybe I should spend the money on Souled American first...

Yup, that would have been Bubbachups, who I am sure is more familiar with it than I am at this point - upon two listens, all I can really say so far is that it seems like a strange, but exquisite album that makes the impression that it would really only open itself up to the listener after repeated listens, although it's enjoyable right from the start. I haven't heard any of his previous solo material, so I cannot offer a comparative perspective, though. Compared to what I remember about Souled American (who I'm way less familiar with than I should be, really), it is sounding a little bit less crushing, a little bit more fragile, but also less song-oriented, interspersed with more ambient elements.

At Real Groovey Recards here is Auckland they have a wall with a few rare 7"s. Some Beatles, Them etc. Last week I asked the guy at the trade counter if there were any more. He pointed to an area behind the counter with about 20 long boxes of 7's. I didn't have time to look but went back today and it's a fucking goldmine! The box of Kiwi stuff was pretty sweet (4 copies of the first Builders 7") but it was the 60's boxes that had the cool shit. I saw original pressing singles by The Sonics, Creation, Dedikation, The Wailers, Link Ray, Standells, Pretty Things  plus heaps of other shit. I was pretty much drooling. Prices are pretty high in some cases. I only had money for one. I got ? & The Mysterians 96 Tears/ Midnight Hour on Cameo-Parkway records I'm a happy camper. I'll  be cherry picking from these boxes for some time I think.

haha kdsb i have that single! how much did you pay for it? mine's really scratched up but i found it in a house my family moved into when i was 13, in my bedroom closet. it was stuck between the woodworking and the wall, along with some other 7 inch--a crappy country record if i remember correctly. i love having it, i love listening to it, but it's SOOOOO beat.

anyway, i'm really curious how much a copy in good condition goes for.

For some reason I haven't come across an LP of Dirty Mind yet.  But when I do, i will buy it.  It's one of my top 10 favorites.

Thanks.  Not unlike Hard Again, in general.  And that's a very good thing.  The 'songiest' track on HA would probably seem like a semi-ambient filler track if it appeared on an Iron & The Albatross or Beat Circus CD.

Not sure. I'm not really a fan. They all had a little sticker with a note "first Builders single" written on.

I was NZ$30. It's in perfect nick so I was happy to pay that. Would probably be a lot cheaper in the states I imagine. Not many copies would have found their way down here but it was a million seller over there.
Plus, it's a truely wonderful track.

i've never run across a copy of it in a store. we have more copies, i'm sure, but also way more garage rock collector nerds.

only ordered two from the boomkat summer sale this year, which is a marked improvement. i love both these covers:

sylvain chauveau - nuage
xela - the dead sea

both on the same record label i believe, which is probably not particularly coincidental.

Following the crowd this week:

Portishead - Third

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

I haven't listened to the Portishead at all yet, but Fleet Foxes are pretty decent. I'd lump them in with The Dodos and Plants & Animals, but they've also got a bit of a Band of Horses thing going on. All of which makes them very au courrant, I suppose.

Certainly not me. I've never heard anything that Ry Cooder has been involved in, to my knowledge anyways.

You're simply not trying hard enough. Get back over there and fill your cart.

xela - the dead sea

I'd be very interested to hear about this. I was put off Xela by his earlier twinlky IDM stuff, but as I understand it, this marked a complete reinvention as a more abstract sound guy. He's always cropping up remixing people from that scene I love (Deaf Center, Machinefabriek etc.) so I think I might need to hear this album.

Also, Sylvain Chauveau is very nice. If you like this one, he has an album called Des Plumes Dans La Tete which is similarly sweet, piano stuff. His other release last year though, S, is a different kettle of poissons - less piano, more beeps, clicks and miscellaneous electronic jiggery-pokery.
