I think you'd like his early stuff. He was a total folkie in the seventies. Mostly just him and his acoustic guitar (at which he is a master) singing about oneness with his inner katra and like that.

He's got that song about the Contras in Nicaragua that has the line "If I had a rocket launcher / I'd make somebody pay" which is the chorus, and I think at the end he says "If I had a rocket launcher / some son-of-a-bitch would die" or something like that. Hardcore.

that sounds like quite a transition.  Surprised 80s life i guess?

Yeah, well I guess being an idealistic folkie type makes you want to help out the Nicaraguans, which makes you want to actually, y'know, go to Nicaragua and check & help out, and then seeing what's going on pisses you off and makes your songs angrier.

Also, dude put out his first album in 1970 and "If I Had A Rocket Launcher" is from 1984. So, yeah, he goes from Christian mystic to political activist, but not overnight.

only ordered two from the boomkat summer sale this year

You're simply not trying hard enough. Get back over there and fill your cart.

xela - the dead sea

I'd be very interested to hear about this. I was put off Xela by his earlier twinlky IDM stuff, but as I understand it, this marked a complete reinvention as a more abstract sound guy. He's always cropping up remixing people from that scene I love (Deaf Center, Machinefabriek etc.) so I think I might need to hear this album.

Also, Sylvain Chauveau is very nice. If you like this one, he has an album called Des Plumes Dans La Tete which is similarly sweet, piano stuff. His other release last year though, S, is a different kettle of poissons - less piano, more beeps, clicks and miscellaneous electronic jiggery-pokery.

thanks for the notes! the clips from the xela album just sounded great on the site, so it was an easy decision at something like £4 in the sale. i'm kind of imagining a rounds-era four tet style clattering and jingling of noises but with a far more unsettling, unpleasant tone of backdrop. of course i might be way off (it hasn't arrived yet) but we'll see.

Yeah, that sounds like the stuff of his I should look into. I know some of his (I'm assuming later stuff) has a sort of slick 80's feel to it which...me no likey. While I think it is a good song, I vastly prefer the Barenaked Ladies version of his song "Lovers In A Dangerous Time." That one has some great lines, especially: "nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight / gotta kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight."

heh heh, U2.

Wooden Wand - Sunset Sleeves LP

ordering the mogwai from amazon.co.uk was about $30 cheaper than insound.

Cover looks like this:

except mine is rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees, and is in a sort of hunter green color scheme rather than that beige color.  Don't know what the deal with that is.

It's a digipak with a sort of stitching detail round the edges of it.  Kind of a trifold deal, the right inner-side has a stylized picture of one of those calendars you get for free with your sears roebuck catalog or something, dated January 1916.  Outside right has the credits and what-not, in a very nice hand (feel like I'm back studying paleography, here).  the left inner-side has the insert, which is the pièce de résistance, a folded up leaf of paper in imitation of the rolls of music you use with a player piano, with random things scribbled on them.

Very pretty!

Though I covet that original edition of the tin type ep all in the paper bag and what not.

Sounds good, I love special packaging. I have that EP in brown paper bag with small hard cover booklet, it's so awesome! And Elliott Brood is a great band of course so I will have to order this new one soon. Or maybe I'll just pick one up during their upcoming European tour.

Mang they still have it for sale on their website but it says 'temporarily unavailable'!  I would consider paying $20CA for that, if they actually ever had it.  Wouldn't mind having some BROOD apparel either, but I will die before I pay 25 dollars for a tshirt.

Morita Doji "Goodbye" (lp)

Hell yeah! Found it on eBay this weekend.

Other recent purchases (after several weeks without buying anything):

Karen Dalton "Green Rocky Road" (cd)
Burning Star Core "Challenger" (cd)
Kevin Drumm "Imperial Distortion" (2cd)
Nadja & Black Boned Angel "Christ Send Light" (cd)
Tim Hecker "Haunt Me, Haunt Me, Do It Again" (cd)
Molasses "You'll Never Be Well No More" (cd)

Also got that free Kozelek EP from his Caldo Verde label by buying the 2cd version of Ghosts of the Great Highway. I already had the regular cd and the vinyl, but yeah, I needed that extra cd too and this free EP was a nice excuse...

What is this free Kozelek EP you speak of? Are you talking about the bonus disc to Ghosts of the Great Highway?

Also, does anybody know if you get any kind of discount for paying for the Elliott Brood CD in US dollars?

Naw, it's a paypal transaction, and it's in the paypal exchange rate, which is like $1CA = $0.92US if my memory serves.

It's a bitch.

Hmm. I may buy other albums on my list instead until there's a more favorable exchange rate.

No, the free EP is a live recording from 2007. There are 7 songs on it and you'll get one for free if you order something from his label Caldo Verde.

Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Chronicles: Indian Slide Guitar Odyssey

Slightly underwhelming on first listen, though still pretty great.  Also, no track is over 10 minutes, which is a little surprising- I like it when he spreads his wings a bit.

I already did, dammit! I've bought both the 2-disc Ghosts reissue and April. I guess both were before the advent of this special deal though. Come to think of it though, I'd really like to have Tiny Cities...

For $19.99 plus $18 shipping from Japan. Quite a bargain, I was lucky to be the only bidder.
