Yeah, big thanks to him for making that mix! Wouldn't have known her music otherwise.

As for your eBay fears, they are irrational indeed, however I wouldn't say eBay is something I couldn't live without. Usually I find the winning bids to be overpriced. People seem to go a bit crazy when bidding because of the competition element that's involved. They want to win the auction and either forget about the actual value of the item or simply didn't even check before bidding. So always do your homework first before bidding. But for items like this, eBay is about the only way to get them.

Hmm. I may buy other albums on my list instead until there's a more favorable exchange rate.

I kinda wonder whether there ever will be again, personally.

i've had something on pre-order from the US for a while and am steadily watching its UK-translated price rise as the company honourably refuses to take my money until it's time to ship the item, so either there is yet hope for your puny dollar, or our venerable sterling is headed the same dark and troubling way.

Oh I couldn't be happier about the exchange rates right now, hehe, it's like getting a 30% discount on everything.

Or better.  Example:

Winter & Winter CDs are over €20 direct from the label, but until the end of June they were $15 from the Downtown Music Gallery in NYC (they're $16 now), plus p+p.  That's about half price- I ordered four ten days ago.  Thank you, economic catastrophe.  We're all going down, but I'm going to have the freshest tunes!

Hey, UPS. Thanks for not ringing the bell or otherwise indicating that you left a package at my door.

new Beck

old Beck

(The Beck thread reminded me that I like Beck now. I haven't listened to either of these yet.)

Given the enormous US trade deficit, you could be right. Really, as I understand it, the only way to rein in the unsustainable trade deficit is for the dollar to fall further. The falling dollar sucks when you want to buy a foreign album (or any import for that matter) but in general it's nothing to bemoan. A big part of why the US has lost so many good manufacturing jobs is because the dollar was overvalued for so long.

For the first time ever, I just ordered a casette tape. It was only $3 (plus $2 shipping).

Your Heart Breaks - Love Is A Long Dark Road

I've listened to it in mp3 form and love it. It's sold by a really cool label called Lost Sound Tapes who sell nothing but cassettes, all for $3 and all with pretty awesome homemade accoutrements. I'm kind of excited to get it.

Oh, and I forgot to include a link to Lost Sound Tapes.

Andrew Jackson Jihad/Ghost Mice - Split
Paul Baribeau - Grand Ledge
Great Job - Great Job
Madeline/The Dead Bird - Split

Thanks for the link. Sounds very charming indeed! I want to buy it but I just never listen to cassettes anymore, hmm...

Hey, that Mixwit website is pretty cool! I like it a lot more than the impersonal Muxtape.

Also got that free Kozelek EP from his Caldo Verde label by buying the 2cd version of Ghosts of the Great Highway. I already had the regular cd and the vinyl, but yeah, I needed that extra cd too and this free EP was a nice excuse...

How is this EP? I don't own Ghosts of the Great Highway on any format at all, which is something that I've been meaning to change for some time, so I guess now would be a good time, especially if that EP is worthwhile as well.

Also, I saw that Morita Doji album on ebay and was kind of thinking of bidding on it and then for some mysterious reason didn't. It's good to see it ended up with a worthy owner, though!

Finally, how's that Kevin Drumm album? Specifically, what are the odds of ending up with a headache as a result of listening to it? The title worried me, but then the boomkat review got my hopes up (and very high) again.

Finally finally, recent purchases:

Damon & Naomi - The Earth Is Blue (CD)
Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea (LP)
Jonah's Onelinedrawing - Sketchy EP #1 (10")

florida vacation!

at park ave cds in orlando last week. awesome store.

daniel johnston - yip/jump music

this album starts off SO strong (first 6 tracks) then has a handful of weak tracks in the middle (i.e. "danny don't rapp"). i could never make it past those weak middle tracks so i never heard anything after them. having finally bought the album i've given the whole thing a listen and to my surprise the last half is nearly as strong as those first 6 tracks. yeah!

sigur ros - med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust

i bought this for my girlfriend, but i think i like it a lot more than she does.

u.s. maple - acre thrills

got it used. score.

and at a market in st. augustine, fl:

nilsson - the point (LP)

a friend of mine always talks about nilsson, so i bought this when i saw it in a big stack of records...turns out it's a children's record. half song/half narrative.  the songs are really good and the story is fairly engaging. so, cool.

I love boomkat, but you have to be careful as they tend to gush at almost everything, as you've no doubt noticed.

I'm enjoying the Kevin Drumm album, but I can't see why it's being hailed as a breakthrough in minimalism or anything. Maybe I just don't listen closely enough, but to me it just sounds like very quiet, uneventful, peaceful drones, a bit like Keith Fullerton Whitman's Playthroughs, but less sharp, gentler.

The titles certainly suggest darker themes but I don't really feel it that strongly from the music itself. Except, and this a really annoying 'except', the very last track finishes with a sudden superloud, high-pitched noise that I feel fairly certain will be unwelcome to your ears bearing in mind what you said about the Machinefabriek performance the other day. The track is called 'We All Get It In The End', so I suppose there's a hint of a warning there, but I really don't like being horribly shocked after over an hour of very quiet, mellow music. Plus don't you think it's a rather obvious and naff musical metaphor for death? Oh well, end result = I never listen to that last track.

Hahaha, yes, I did notice.

Thanks for the write-up! It certainly does sound like something I should check out, even if your praise is not quite as gushing as that boomkat review (or Keith Fullerton Whitman's description on the Mimaroglu site, for that matter). I'll proceed with caution while listening to the last track. I seem to be more sensitive to high pitches than most people are, so I wouldn't be surprised if I also ended up just skipping it after a first listen. But the rest of it sounds very much like something I would enjoy.

Speaking of 'Playthroughs', I just listened to that again for the first time in a while the other day (possibly for the first time since acquiring my own copy), and I was blown away all over again. What a magnificent record.

I know! And I have an equally abundant love for Multiples too. I wish he'd pull his finger out and release another classic of the genre. I mean, come on Keith, I haven't got all day. Some people.

Lisbon is great too but I don't listen to it as much as I should because it's soooo long.
