i just went to the package store and, trying to both a) avoid dark beer, and b) drink something new, i left with a 12-pack of Franziskaner, the "classic bavarian hefe-weisse." i probably won't drink one until tomorrow night, so i don't know yet whether i like it. any testimonials?

i don't know why i picked it. there was a monk on the label. i guess the monk spoke to me.

turns out, i love this beer. i'm gonna be hard-pressed to risk my $12 on anything else this summer.

I went to buffalo today on a beer run and came back with around 30 different beers, highlights include a 12er of 90 minute, an aprihop, ST uneartly, Stone IPA, Ruination, Arrogant Bastard, (they were out of double bastard), some victory ipas, uhh, and a multitude of other IPAs.  Actually I came back with IPAs almost exclusively, but that's okay since they are near impossible to get up here but will balance my stash of the easily accessable wheat and fruit beers available locally.

Well, since it's summer, Oberon is going to be their big one, that's their American Wheat beer, pretty good if you like that style (I don't, personally, but Oberon is drinkable).  Other favorites of mine are the Third Coast Old Ale, Two-Hearted, and Hopslam.  One of my absolute favorite beers is their Bell's Best Brown Ale but that's a seasonal that runs fall through spring so you probably won't find it.  Honestly, the only thing of theirs I've tried that I haven't liked was their Hell Hath No Fury... Ale, but also the possibility is good that I just wasn't in the right mood for it that day and I probably ought to give it another shot.  So really, you could probably just pick whatever style of beer you like, find their version and give it a shot.

i'm reading this book on the building of the transcontinental railroad, right, and a minute ago, i started a new chapter called "getting to california." somewhere in the first paragraph, pandora--i was listening to internet radio--turned up a song by the yonder mountain string band or the hackensaw boys or something about going to california. crazy, i thought.

i set down the book for a minute to check up on lptj. first thread i open, and there's josh talking about council bluffs, which, of course, is the epicenter of this book so far. the movement to build the transcontinental railroad was born in council bluffs.

I converted someone to the ways of dark beers tonight thanks to Berkshire Brewing's Coffeehouse Porter. It reminds me of amazing black iced coffee, but in a beer. Also had one of the Sixpoint Apollo Wheat, which was good stuff, a little more body and bite than I'm used to in a wheat, and it was excellent with some moules et frites.
