i had the stone brewery 12th anniversary beer last night.

they call it a "bitter chocolate oatmeal stout," which is pretty accurate. it was pretty tasty, even the burnt waffle taste (which confused me at first, but i ended up enjoying). it was a little too syrupy/alcohol tasting though (at least for summer while accompanying a burrito).

i saw it on the beer list on tap and ordered it. i had no idea what style of beer it was.

i just stuck to burrito->water->beer->repeat.

BCS is a real treat on a winter evening.  I'm not sure I'd enjoy it that well in July either.

That's probably true; I should save a couple bottles for the cold weather, and see if I like it better after a day in the snow.

The other big upside is that since it's so intense, I think it might work really well in small amounts as a cooking-ingredient.  It seems like it'd be a good one for making stout ice cream.

somebody help me out: what are some good summery beers (ales, pilsners) that cost less than $15 for a 12-pack?

Warsteiner is a standby for me, and I usually find it for $10-12 for a 12-pack.  It's a fairly straightforward German pils, not really one of the better ones but solid and comes in amber bottles so you shouldn't experience much skunkiness. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's drinkable, affordable, widely available, and head and shoulders above not only the bud/miller/coors crowd but also much of the sam adams/leinenkugels higher-end macros.

i haven't seen bad boy 2 either, but i heard it's  crazy. the director was sick og cgi and special effects in movies so everything that explodes or crashes or something like that in the movie actually did so in real life. so the budget was through the roof. it has been on my to-see list for a very long time. most of my life actually.

Bad Boys 2 RULES.

The last half hour is gold. You have 2 hours of car chases and gun fights and the big two car chases involve:
1) haitians and a bridge and pushing cars off a trailer-bed into traffic
2) dead bodies thrown into traffic and explosions

and they blow up a house and also the only boobs in the movie are dead boobs

so that is the first two hours then THEY GO TO CUBA. SHOOT THE FUCK UP OUT OF A VILLA. STEAL A HUMMER AND DRIVE IT THROUGH A FUCKING SHANTY TOWN. (I believe this is a microcosm of relations between North and Central/South America) AND THEN THEY DRIVE TO GUATANOMO BAY AND THERE ARE MINES.

Man that movie is great there are so many explosions.

PS I officially rescind my Old Style diss. I would not feed it to pigs, it's not so bad. Better than Heineken.

You know what goes good with water?  Whiskey.

This reminds me of a story!

Last week a friend of mine went into a local "bar" and ordered a Johnnie Walker and Water and the waitress didn't know what he meant, and he said, "you know like how you mix a liqueur with another fluid?  Yeah, do that with Johnnie Walker and water" and she came back and said the bartender didn't know how to make it and he re-explained to her what it was and she came back with a shot of JW and a glass of water.

She was tipped poorly.

That's horrifying.

Kinda like the time my dad almost got kicked out of a comedy club in Denver.  See, in Montana (and probably other places) whiskey and water is sometimes called a "ditch."  The waitress had never heard of this, and thought he was adamantly saying something else.

It's a pretty special beer.  I think if you put it head to head against that Oak Aged Yeti you have there, itself a fine beer in the same style, you'd find that the BCS is going to be a significantly bigger, better beer.

So I had the Bourbon County Stout yesterday, and I actually prefer the Oak Aged Yeti Stout.   The BCS is just too thick, high in alcohol, and sweet.  It's got some interesting flavors of Mocha and smoke and such, but I feel like they're all having to play second fiddle to the alcohol-syrup feel.

Never try Three Floyds Dark Lord Ale then Smile

BCS is a real treat on a winter evening.  I'm not sure I'd enjoy it that well in July either.

I've gotta say I agree with Greg on the BCS. It's got some interesting stuff going on, but a lot of it is hard to get to through all the sweetness and boozy flavor. For me, anyway.

As for stouts, I've lately been enjoying Old Rasputin by North Coast. I know it's not the time of year for such things, but it's been working pretty well.

I was at a bar a couple years back, and I asked the bartender, "Could I have a whisky, neat?"
"What?"
"A whisky, neat?"
"I don't know how to make that."
"Oh, okay.  Then could I just get a whisky?"
"All right.  You want ice in that?"
"No thank you."

you took the words right out of my mouth! i am convinced that they actually flattened real-life slums and killed a number of poverty-stricken peasants to film that scene.

I made a drink last night that was bitters, chambord, orange curacao, and cognac with a twist of lime over crushed ice.

It was good.

this is especially funny because we were watching it going, "oh man, that's gotta be cgi" every 5 seconds.
