I think a lot people don't like IPAs because there are so many shitty ones out there, that are just bitter as fuck without giving you anything to latch onto, flavorwise.  But there are few greater pleasures than a nice, high-abv IPA on a warm summer day, sir.

And that's just it: I really want to find a good pale ale to drink during the summer because I occasionally feel weird sipping on dark stuff when it's 90+ degrees outside.  But my (limited) experience with IPAs has uniformly been "tastes great at the outset of first sip but a few seconds later settles into the most disgustingly bitter hopsy aftertaste imaginable, causing me to take another sip just to rid my tongue of the taste, and again and again, ad infinitum."

IPAs are malty.  They just have a big hop aroma/flavor/bitter bite that usually comes out more than the maltiness.  For a well-balanced example of the style, try New Holland's Mad Hatter, if it's available out there, which I doubt.  Or something you can most likely get, the (overpriced) Dogfish Head 60-minute IPA.  (Listen, guys, do NOT tell me how much better the 90-minute or the 120-minute beers are, as that is not the kind of thing I'm talking about here)

Lately I've been drinking this stuff by a brewer called Arcadia based in Battle Creek, MI. It's pretty good stuff! I like their IPA really well. It's not really hoppy, but has a nice flavor and very good balance. It's got almost a dry-hopped flavor, which I enjoy. I also have their Scotch Ale, which is quite good also. Beertopia has a stout, porter, and pale ale by them also, which I'm going to have to work my way through on my next couple trips there.

yo blucas, don't know much about this new brewing company--they have their shit contract brewed, which sucks, but they're just starting out so I can't hate on them too much, plus I haven't tasted it--but they're doing a tasting of their new ale in your neighborhood on Friday.  I'm going to be well on my way to Wisconsin Dells by that time but if you want to check it out.  Here's the web site: http://www.halfacrebeer.com/  and the event is at Vas Foremost Liquors at 2300 N Milwaukee from 5-7pm this Friday.  That is free beer right there, my friend.

Nice!  I'm at Vas Foremost a couple times a week.  The Half Acre lager's been showing up at the liquor stores around me.  I tried it once, and it was pretty good, but not worth the price (it was $8 or $9 for a six-pack).  Free is a good price though!  And I'd be interested in trying an ale from them.

I tend not to drink home alone for the most part, but I had a nice cool beer (a La Chouffe on tap) with a colleague after work today, and it was so great that I couldn't resist the temptation of picking up a few bottles of beer while I was grocery shopping afterwards. So I'm now enjoying a Westmalle Dubbel and thinking about how I should definitely do this more often.
