Goddamn, I tried this beer on tap at Hopleaf that I hadn't seen on the menu (mebbe wasn't paying close enough attention, can't be arsed to check back on their online menu to see if it's there or not) brewed by Allagash called Fluxus.  Brewed w/ pilsner malts, rye, and yarrow.  Spicy w/ floral and herbal notes, some hints of hefeweizen-style banana and clove but with the rye spiciness and some shit I don't have words to describe.  Never tasted anything quite like it.  Started out tasting amazing, loved it, but it did wear on me by the end of the glass.  Still, A+ for inventive brewing, 'cause you ain't never gonna taste another beer like this one.

Hey!  That was one of the ones I brought up to our reunion in NH!  I loved it!  I'm not sure whether or not it would wear on me by the end, as it was one of a number of bottles I opened, and everyone was just grabbing like six-ounce pours here and there.  I should try it again.

coldforge alert: I bought the Chartreuse VEP yesterday, after much hemming and hawing.  It was good -- drier than the regular Chartreuse, without the syrupy undertones it usually has, so the herb flavors are more complex and pronounced.  But essentially, the same major tastes as the green.  Definitely better, and definitely not worth the extra cash that it costs.

Actually, I'd say that reviewing beer is to a great extent a fool's endeavor, because the better the beer, the less likely you are to be in any shape to intellectually engage with it once you sit down to write your review.

When I drink Fluxus I drink it with friends.  It is a good beer to mellow out with and split up, but wearing.  I have nothing to add, because this review is very accurate.

This actually isn't true at all. Go take a look at Beer Advocate, man, you'll find many intelligently-written reviews about great beer. A lot of those guys definitely frown on getting tanked on good beer, as well.

Could well be actually. I shudder to think what the general reaction to this will be, but Budweiser and Grolsch in bottles are pretty much all I drink.

But as I say, I'm really an anti-purist. In Korea, all the other ex-pats would moan about the fizzy draught lager you get there, but I really liked it!

Judged by this criterion, the Kasteel Tripel I just had is the BEST BEER EVER.
