I like cooking shows! Is that not real enough?!
A cooking show like Good Eats = awesome. A cooking show like Top Chef = not my jam.
But yeah, I would say that the latter is a reality show and the former is not. It's a certain narrative convention that I think of when I think "reality show" that does not exist on actual Food Network "here's how to cook this dish" type shows.

Yeah, I can certainly watch a half-hour of "Here's the social history of this dish, here's how you make it, here's the science behind it, here's an anecdote about this one time I had it," but not so much the "i hope my pie wins better than Starla's pie because Starla is a bitch"

I voted Twitch, even though I've never seen the programme. It's been bothering me ever since, so I thought I better 'fess up. Sorry.

Hey, have any of you guys seen the Wire? I'm about six episodes into Season One, and it turns out that it's really great. Anyone heard of this show?

You guys should watch this! It's basically like DS9 if instead of The Dominion there was a bunch of black people selling drugs and if instead of The Federation there was a weaselly-looking Irish guy.

Almost a year has passed since my last communication w Milch proper so here is a secret for you guys, he was going to have GK's Wright write the deadwould movies but then he fired Wright because "the guy is a fucking lunatic, who the fuck embeds in the front lines of a war??" but we all know that's code for "he might be smarter than me & therefore must be stopped"

I can't remember what "secrets" I've already posted. I mean, there's my theory (and when I say "theory" I mean it in the scientific sense, so unless we have some creationists in our midst you best not be disbelieving me) that dm knew from the get-go that jfc was going to be totally awful, though he never would admit any such thing, and in fact pretty much intended the show as a fuck-you to hbo for canceling deadwould. Though I've probably posted that, too. Oh, he wanted
Jeffrey Jones
to play the ghost of barry's molester -- not as a sick joke but in order to let Jones work through his demons.

That theory would explain so much about that show
Though unfortunately it doesn't explain all of the apologist for it around here

Ha! I guess I am one of those.
Apologist for John from Cinci, but out right lover of Generation Kill which was as tense, funny and downright interesting as it was last week. Trombly is slowly somehow becoming my favourite character, his psychosis is far more interesting than Captain Americas. Ray and Colbert are probably my favourite tv couple, and Doc is fucking awesome. The singalongs are great, the barrage of brilliant lines and shocking images all coat a cake which is so very rich. Those of you who aren't watching it are missing out.

Last night's Mad Men episode was way better than the season premiere. Of course, I think it was further improved by the decision to drink Old Fashioneds and Manhattans while watching it (made with rye of course). If it continues in this direction, it might be more than just a very pretty show, though really, I'll settle for the prettiness.

If I wanted to watch a single episode of Mad Men, to determine whether I might like it, what would be a good one for me to watch?

the first one. the tone is pretty consistent throughout, and the plot is just complex enough that you'll want to take it from the top.
