i wear glasses and then my vision gets corrected and then like a year later i use computers and play videogames and my vision suffers and i get a new prescription that corrects my eyes again.

i'm like a super hero.  a computer using, video game playing, glasses wearing super hero.

I'm another extremely short(near)sighted one. I have a focal length of about 6 inches. I too would be dead by age 10 without my glasses - I'd've fallen over a cliff or stepped on a snake or been eaten by a sabretooth tiger. I think of myself as a contact lens wearer, but I haven't actually worn them for about 3 months. I love my current glasses...

Which I've had for about 18 months. No pics of them on my head though. Greg's new specs are fab!

This is the thread I was looking for!

So yesterday I snagged a $20 exam coupon from the net for this place right around the corner from my office. Took twenty minutes, guy wrote out my prescription and even measured my pupillary distance! Just ordered three pairs of glasses from the same place Greg got his. I got:

For $8. They pretty much look like my current pair.

For $10. Sort of ridiculous, but I like em. And at $10, I can afford to be a little ridiculous.

Got these as sunglasses for $13. I haven't owned a pair of sunglasses in 10+ years.

Applause for the goofy pair.  I'm thinking about an eye exam in the near future, as my seeing-far isn't as great as it used to be, but the idea of having to pick out a pair of glasses terrifies me.

elpollodiablo - Where is this place with the coupon?  I have needed glasses since mine disappeared four years ago, and haven't gotten any because exams and lenses and frames are generally incredibly too-expensive for me.

I guess it's pretty gay but I'd like a pair of wayfarers. Or, you know, wayfarer ripoffs, since the actual pair is more 'n a hunnert bux. Out of curiosity, is there anyone on this board that actually owns a >=$100 pair of sunglasses?

This is exactly my situation, db.  I've never had glasses (always been told I don't need 'em), but lately far away things look less clear, and people say "maybe you need glasses."  I think I should schedule an eye exam.

That was pretty much my exact line of thought regardingmy black plastic pair with the stripes on the sides, and I've now ended up wearing them kind of a lot.

I had good luck with going to a lenscrafters, trying on a bunch of pairs there, then remembering what I liked and going on to Zenni Optical to find lookalikes.  And it gets way less terrifying when you know you can always be like, "Eh, that was only eight bucks.  I'll try a different one now."

I didn't know glasses could be that cheap.  Mostly because of my parents, who are both seriously visually impaired, and didn't have a lot of money when we were growing up.  I think I was allowed to try Mom's glasses on once and she was watching me the entire time.

Also the selection terror is probably also driven by my parents because I see pictures of them from the 70s and my mother's glasses look fucking terrible.  Dad was a player though.  In the early 70s he was rocking the round Lennon specs and a Harrison moustache.

Foogly specs are a thing right now, though! Even if you fuck up and get something ghastly, you'll still fit in around here.

NICE.  Yeah, I tried on bunches of glasses before I ever had to get a pair of my own, as my pappou was an optician by trade, and I spent many a long afternoon bored in his shop, putting on different pairs, waiting for him to turn around so I could poke the hot sand machine.

I should patent prescription shutter shades.

Greg, that's awesome.  My dad was a gym teacher at my elementary school, so I got to play with all the gym equipment before school, but that novelty wore off by about fourth grade.

Though one of my mom's textbooks from college had a naked lady in it so that was nice.

Mine were $70 for the frames, but have prescription lenses, so it depends on how you count it.

My girlfriend owns a pair of wayfarers. I think she bought them new. I'm extremely wary of spending that kind of money on sunglasses because you have to put them down whenever you go indoors. I used to have a pair of 71 cent aviatorish sunglasses with perfectly classic frames, and they were the best pair of sunglasses I've ever owned in terms of style and comfort. But I left them in someone's car, and then they disappeared.

I've just recently gotten contacts, and I need sunglasses badly. Lately I've gotten used to wearing the big granny ones with the thick ear pieces designed to envelop your ordinary spectacles, at least for driving. Those won't do for just walking around, though.

I do, though the pair I just bought has prescription transitions lenses (so no need to take them off inside), since the frames work well as both sunglasses and regular ones, and I wear graduated bifocals that specifically have a wide mid-range for computer work, which I'm more hesitant to trust the inexpensive online sources to do right. Don't know if they even do them. But yeah, even without the prescription, the frames were well over $100, but I feel like glasses are an item that I get my money's worth out of when I really love them and wear them all the time for years, even if they are sold at a ridiculous markup. It takes me ages to find frames I love, so when I do, I'm getting them.

So it seems I lost the plastic pair I'd had, which is unfortunate (I think they fell out of my bag while I was in the subway).  I'm ordering a replacement pair.

While I'm at it, I'm also going through the 8- and 10-dollar pairs for sale, and thinking about getting something totally ridiculous.  There are some uuuuugly glasses on that site!

I've been watching a lot of Burn Notice, and now all the glasses I'm looking at, I'm thinking, "Hmm... I could use that as part of a disguise to make me look like a real-estate mogul from Newark."

I wish express shipping was available at that site. Now that I've ordered new specs, I can't stop noticing how scratched and fucked up this pair is.
