The faster pace of life is one of the very few differences from the past that's actually real. I wouldn't say it equates with a taste for novelty - the obsessive taste for novelty is one of the hallmarks of the Enlightenment, and the movers and shakers of the Enlightenment were gentlemen farmers. Then there's the Satyricon from the time of Nero and a chorinicle of novelties as refined and as crude as anything you'll find today. Wally does have a point, but I don't think it's one unique to our time.

And here is me, thinking I'm the first person to say what I said. Gosh darn.
Thanks for all those references GI, cleared up my mind no end.

GI - the things observed in your post are why I said, in the piece in question - 3rd sentence, 2nd graf -

Am I being paranoid, or was Wally sarcastic, Andrew overly serious and John frustrated?
Four character sketches in fourteen words. No wonder the only writing I get done these days are analytic essays. Anyway, John, I know you are one of the world's great Petronius lovers, I just wanted to nudge the discussion away from The World is Getting Worse land.

why does everybody always think I'm frustrated of late? A note here for clarity's sake: unless I say "I am frustrated" or "I am angry," you can take it as given that I am neither frustrated nor angry! The preceding exclamation point was a friendly-emphatic exclamation point, not a yelling at ppl exclamation point
carry on then

I'm thinking of Ginsburg's "you can't win, you can't break even, you can't even quit the game".

I was being sarcastic.
I don't know why you decided to post what you did. Other then to reference things you've read. If you thought my post suggested I was interested in a disscussion about the idiocy of the modern world then I wrote badly.

Then Andrew replied to that, and then I replied to that strain in the conversation. So yeah, I did think you were at least partially interested in the idiocy of the modern world.

Ok. I apologize in advance if I am not getting this. I am confused as to what we are now discussing.
Are we talking about why people always want to hear new songs?
Or
Are we talking about why people don't particularly gravitate to new songs that are not exploring any new ideas musically?
Or
None of the above?
It seemed to me the music being discussed in the article was new music just that it was not novel or experimental at all.
Am I correct?
Just asking, so I can follow along here. Don't throw things at me please.

The real question here is: Which is cooler, a talking T-Rex, or a talking Utahraptor?

I might have totally missed the boat on this discussion, but I'm tired and at work and its been a crappy day. But here's my two cents, I think that music doesn't have to break new ground to be great, because to someone, it is new. I always liked Rancid better than the Clash, because hey, it touched me first. And I like 'Electriclarryland' better than 'Locust Abortion Technician' for the same reason, and so many others where the one I discovered first was derivative or, when it really comes down to it, just plain inferior, but still for me, better, because you never forget your first time. ( And, hopefully, your first time will lead you to next times in a similar but possibly more rewarding vein.) Some kid out there will hear that new Kirkwood and it'll open them up to more possibilities, and thus remain their favourite because of time and place and cos it opens doors.
P.s, the greatest Meat Puppets record ever is Monsters! I will fight you to the death!
PPS: Marinus, I made you a cd last night. Please E mail me your address. Hope fully it will be 'novel' !

UTAH REPRESENT!!!
I'd love to get back into this discussion but certain avenues I'd like to delve into have been pretty exhausted. So I am satisfied with representing my home state and it's awesome dinosaur.

Over the last 2months I've had a lot of time free. I've been listening to something with attention at least an eigth of that time. Yet it's become a case of only three or four albums being played.
I like them so it's cool.
Just wondering does this mean, I am sterile emotionally, and rejecting new ideas, or is it, that I want to better understand something that already matters to me.
Like I said I like what I listen to, so you can say as you please.

Like the article says, In Bone There is An Awesome Dinosaur.
Actually, to bring this back around, I think I only like this dinosaur so much 'cause it's novel. If I'd never seen a stegosaurus before, and someone showed me one, I'd be all "OMG BEST DINO EVR". Which is pretty much what my take on stegosaurus was when I was a kid.
