Going back to Moss Icon, I've been checking out their discography record.  Good stuff!  And definitely weird, like Lord Byron's version of a hardcore band.

Next I'm going to check out Embrace.  I would then move on to Rites of Spring, but to be honest, Guy Piciotto has always kind of bothered me.

absolutepunk is streaming this thing i think is absolutely one of the best records of the year, even though it's pretty much just cap'n jazz/american football references: http://absolutepunk.net/artists/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=23921

and then, on the total other side of the spectrum, a few months ago an austin band named driver friendly released a kickstarter-funded record that is the best third-wave emo thing i've heard in ages. like, deja entendu-ish in terms of just overwhelming quality. it also sounds beautiful, the guitar tones are really something: http://open.spotify.com/album/3TKTUjkWHm4tDXhiroIAJC

if you don't have spotify, this is the leadoff track, it's super massive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibmfBWzQ41A

1. Moss Icon rules.

2. I don't like Embrace nearly as much as Rites of Spring

3. What is wrong with you?

I don't know!

Actually, maybe it's the fact that historically I have always liked Minor Threat, but have never been all that into Fugazi (except for Repeater).  However, I have come around on non-Repeater Fugazi in the last couple of months (strangely, due to Red Medicine, which I have heard is not all that popular with people).  Maybe I'm ready for Rites of Spring?

I think it was that thread that made me fall in love with this site actually.

Red Medicine is great! I didn't know that it's not all that popular--in fact, I often hear it listed as one of their best. In On the Kill Taker and End Hits are my all-time favorites, but I feel like Fugazi has one of the most consistently great catalogs in hardcore (at least out of bands whose careers span nearly two decades, which I guess there aren't that many of). The only one I'm not as in to is 13 Songs, and even that is still really good.

Red Medicine and The Argument were my gateway drugs. I'd tried the chronological attack earlier with Fugazi and stalled out.

These days I consider myself a hardline later-era Fugazi fan.

Well, I mean, they got better and better with every album, so it's hard not to be.

I'd go so far to say that The Argument is unquestionably their best, most accomplished album. It's not my absolute favorite, but it's in the top, I don't know, four, I guess. Top three.

The last year or so I've been finally coming around to everything other than 13 Songs. Well by "everything other than" I mostly mean Steady Diet and The Argument. Guess I should get some more

also embrace is awesome. "no more pain" is a way important song; the one time i interviewed ian mackaye we talked about that song for a few minutes, and he still thinks of it as a manifesto, sort of like "margin walker"

Glad people are showing some love for Fugazi here, they get a lot of hate on some boards for some reason and they're still a big part of why I want to keep playing music. The Argument was really a fantastic sign-off. Props to their workman attitude--i think they steadily honed their craft though the years and never lost intensity.

I should probably check out The Argument next (maybe after I listen to some Rites of Spring).

Fugazi has an interesting history with me--the three albums I remember listening to in 7th grade were "Repeater", "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge", and "Best Before 1984".  I am still a pretty big fan of Mudhoney and Crass, but for some reason I never went much further into Fugazi, until the last year or so.

I also regret never seeing Fugazi live, despite numerous opportunities.
