I used to not get em. At least, I didn't really have much interest in them, and consequently didn't spend much time seeking them out. Lately, though, I've gotten incredibly bored with my RSS feeds; I'm sick of flicking over the cliched-ass boozhy/progressive bullshit on Slate and Salon, and reading the leads from NYT and CNN can only occupy so much time. I like a nice heady mix of information and entertainment; Gothamist has been my absolute fav since moving here, as I really like the fact that there's a good combination of local stuff and political/national interest stuff. Could anyone recommend any other blogs for a new Brooklynite? I'd like some semi-local sites, though anything that's just plain exceptional would be much appreciated.

Thanks, kids!

I'm still unsold on blogging in general - a number of times I've subscribed to something which interests me and then jumped ship a week later after the incessant useless updates wear down my patience. There are two blogs I do subscribe to and follow religiously, so they're in the 'plain exceptional' category:

Language Log
I Blame the Patriarchy

There's a third one I follow, John Hawks weblog, on human evolution and paleoanthropology, but that's because I have a few bees in my bonnet about appeals to evolution in explanations of human behaviour and norms, and I make strong claims about the same (they are universally bunk), so I need to keep myself up to date about the broad movements in the field if I were to attempt to be at least minimally conscientious.

I Blame the Patriarchy is a little shrill for me, thanks. I used to follow Language Log, but it gets a bit dry.

Thanks for the links, though!

I think it's weird that people would find Twisty shrill.  She's just so hilarious!

hey miles, you should read Oh No They Didn't. hahaha.

Strange, I dumped all the other feminist blogs because they were shrill/full of useless updates/lifestyle politics. Twisty is the only one that has my attention all the way.

Then again, I'm very often taken up in awe at the SCUM Manifesto. Reading it after having read some classic misogynistic texts makes it all the better - if I had my chance to take my Schopenhauer undergrad course again, I'd use my coursework to compare and contrast this text with Arthur's famous anti-woman tirade, with hilarious results.

I don't think I meet the requirements for the Men's Auxiliary, but, then again, the requirements are a little steep.

Don't really know. I'm pretty fire-and-forget when it comes to RSS feeds. But apparently I could tell you what bars Janeane Garofalo likes in the city.

I'm just upset that your last entry was crossposted.  Do we not deserve exclusive content cf?

Which 'we'? The ones that don't respond over there, or the ones that don't respond over here?

I can give you some blogs that are guaranteed to get you riled up each morning, too, although perhaps some of the above will do the trick. Just promise to stop calling feminists "shrill"!

I also like the flavorpill sites over the -ist sites, though I've really only compared the Chicago ones.

I promise, as long as they're not totally shrill like the woman who writes IBTP.
