and for you caption skippers: note that the first three pics you see are of the same location: two, in 1970; the third, today. blog just does this over & over; living here, it's an awesome thing to see. sometimes depressing. sometimes not! anyhow. that is a great blog.

That blog makes me want to start a similar Richmond-themed blog. I may have to email the person who runs it and find out how they access the period photos they use.

I read a site called Forgotten Chicago and they use a ton of sources, which they document fairly extensively, as well as accepting submissions from readers of the site.  I think you'd probably be going through a lot of old newspapers on microfiche at the library and reading a lot of old books published locally, etc.

Heh, I didn't know there was a Forgotten Chicago site.  I've been reading Forgotten NY for years.

Is there a local conservancy organization? The one in LA is a great resource, and has done a lot of that research already.

it's not a snazzy design or anything, but it's pretty interesting I think

No idea. I will look into that too.

Also, I've added all these forgotten/lost/vanishing/endangered blogs to my rss feeds. This stuff is awesome.

also, for new york, this site is great:
http://nyc.everyblock.com/

you enter a zip code and it pulls all kind of stuff centered on that neighborhood into a page for you.  it's kind of amazing.

If you're the kinda person who thinks that bad shit is gonna happen to you, this is like a dessert menu of suck. Will I be raped, mugged, or just get explosive diarrhea from Villabate's?

My friend's boyfriend writes this math blog that I just found out about. Even the stuff I already knew (which will be a lot of it for anyone with much stats knowledge) I'm enjoying reading about as he's entertaining while explaining the concepts unusually well: http://doctormath.blogspot.com/

I've got a blog for the first time ever. It's library science-related (a class assignment), so I don't know how interesting it would be to an outsider, but I try to keep it engaging at least for the fellow students in my class who have to read it. I also rattle on and on about metadata as it relates to my iTunes library (and allmusic, and rateyourmusic.com, etc etc).

It's here:
