The best is when you start to cough up serious phlegm. Each chunk represents more space in your lungs!

edit: But also tasting and smelling things.. Those might be the best, really.

I decided on the way to work this morning that I wouldn't buy any more tobacco. Smoked my last cigarette on the way to the bus stop. I doubt this will last long, but I'm curious. It's 2pm and I'm not feeling that bad, just a slight bit brittle maybe.
Maybe I should read this whole thread for tips.

I'm hopping on this encouragement train.

Thirding the encouragement. Give it two weeks. If you don't feel better enough to justify quitting, wait another week.

Went out drinking with a friend last night.  She smoked two cigarettes in front of me.  While I entertained the idea of having one, it was nothing like the cravings I had even a couple weeks ago.  In fact, my thought process was more bemused, I might have wanted that before, than anything last night.

So I’ve made it 3 days so far, which I understand is how long worst of the physical withdrawal lasts. It was suspiciously easy. Considering I’ve been a medium/heavy smoker for 20+ years I was expecting it to be really horrible. I remember how I used to feel even by the end of a long meeting when I’d be ready to claw the eyes out of any motherfucker with another point to discuss. Didn’t get anything like that. Still a ways to go of course.

It was like that for me too - I found it was the the patches that really took the edge off the withdrawal in those early days. At least, that's how it seemed. Best part of 5 months on now, and I don't think about it much. It's a big help that I go out about once every two months and almost never put myself in a situation where I even have the opportunity, let alone the temptation. I don't think I could've done it back in my pre-fatherhood/pre-public-smoking-ban days of hanging out in smoky pubs most nights.

The thing that sees me through on the rare occasions where I might fancy one is the memory of how crushingly disappointing that 'giving in' smoke was whenever I had it before - I mean, the first hit is seismic (and actually kind of unpleasant for its exaggerated effect) but very, very soon after you're thinking how ordinary and unsatisfactory it all is.

That's kind of where I am at the moment. I'll bum one maybe once every few months when I'm drinking and the first few puffs will be satisfying, but then I'll get this really unpleasent head rush followed by a realization that smoking is not nearly as enjoyable as it seemed to be. And those smokes seem to be getting further and further apart.

Has anybody tried electronic cigarettes? I'm giving them some serious thought.

Congrats to all the quitters!

It's been over three months now.  I'm unfortunately become one of those ex-smokers who cannot deal with smoke around me.  Last night, we went to a former funeral home turned hot dog stand/karaoke bar and it was intensely foggy.  While it didn't bug me then, I had a hard time sleeping and at the gym just d/t the lingering smell.
