Watch out, reverse Pfork bashing is fast becoming the new Pfork bashing!

I'm in favour of this development, though.

Anyway, cool write-up, excellent point about the bandname, and that album went on my eMusic wishlist, to be downloaded when my download credits renew next week.

More freebies over on Daytrotter, fyi- two sessions.

They sound like a band that might have existed just as 'indie' was crystallising- a sort of mid/late-'80s-ish quality to their guitar sound.

Aah, it takes me back...

john, you were OTM on dead oceans being a great label name. when i first heard of them, that was the first thing i thought. they have a pretty unfuckwithable roster, too.

I've been sort of suspicious of Dead Oceans, mainly because I'm not sure why it needed to be created. It was formed by the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian folks with an ex-Misra guy. Was it just an acrimonious Misra thing and dude split with a couple Misra bands, found new sponsors, and created a new name?

It is a pretty great label name though.

I just saw the Donkeys two nights ago in San Diego at the Whistlestop. Fantastic show, and it was packed to the brim. I bought the new album at the show, and its beautiful. Its really feel good music, something that can often be terrible, but they pull it off. Easily on of the best bands from San Diego.

Pitchfork slammed this album today for sounding like it was made in 1969. I guess thats not the correct era to rip off at the moment. Maybe a year ago it was ok to sound like that, but not now. Just wanted to let you all know so you can update your opinions on this band.
