So VH1's duct taped together another list show: Top 100 Hip Hop Songs.
They're talkin about Master P's groan-tastic "Make 'Em Say UUUNNNGGGHHHFFFRRRTHGILSIASLDIFIASFTA"

that's a good song, although the best No Limit Records song is Mac's "Murda, Murda, Kill, Kill" featuring Mystikal
i would be interested in seeing the list, is it on the internet somewhere?

They've got the first hour's worth of the list (#s 100 - 81) up on VH1.com. But man if that site doesn't try its damndest to paralyze your browser with all that shit going at once.
There's quite a bit of good old school stuff in there that I'd either forgotten about or never heard. Happy to see Pete Rock & CL Smooth get mentioned.

i just wanted to see the list, some are a little unexpected, like the Tribe song they chose is "Check the Rhime", good song but i was expecting to see something like "Can I Kick It?" or "Electric Relaxation". i'm happy to see "B.O.B." as Outkast's entry. And the Lil Wayne's song is "Tha Block Is Hot", i mean come on, have some gut and put "Lollipop" or "A Milli" there for christ. not that TBIH is a bad song. and there's a bunch of fairly old underground stuff like Black Sheep and Arrested Development but no Main Source.
anyway it's a pretty good batch of songs for what it's worth

that's only 80-100. "Can I Kick It?" will definitely be on there. Also, "Hey Ya" will be appalling high. I'm surprised VH1 would include a Lil Wayne song at all.

Man, that list is so making me want to write my own, personal, high-lariously uninformed list.

That Masta P song is bullshit to be on that list. It's not one of the top THOUSAND best hip hop songs.

I didn't even look at the list. "Stan"? That's atrocious. The Eminem contribution, were there any justice in the world, would be "Cum On Everybody", which I doubt was even a single.

a lot of songs on the list are not one of the top thousand best hip hop songs, but i think it should be there for cultural relevance, whether you like it or not Master P and his record label sold millions and millions of records during the late 90s and "Make 'em Say Uuuggh" is pretty much the quintessential No Limit song. i think no limit deserve a spot in the hip hop canon even though most music enthusiasts don't care much for it. lists like this are never THE best hip hop or rock and roll songs ever, they're just canonizing the genre.
and x-post to blucas and andrew, Stan is a great song and not having Eminem on the list would be ridiculous, and Stan is just as good as any other of his singles, it's 6:43 and was a #1 for i don't know how long and then there was that performance of the song with Elton John.

Even if Eminem deserves to be on the list (kinda a big if; I like Eminem, but there's a lot of awesome hip-hop over the ages), he has like, a dozen tracks better than "Stan."

i agree that he has a bunch of better tracks than "Stan"
not having Eminem on the list though would be crazy, he's one of the highest selling rap artists of all time, if not THE highest selling. i mean, you didn't really expect to see madlib or something on a list like that? those lists are all about historical relevance and shit like that, Roxanne Shante's "Roxanne's Revenge" isn't even among the best million hip hop songs ever, but it sparked off
a whole hip hop war
so it definitely deserves a spot.
edit: well, saying it's not among the million best songs was kind of harsh of me, it's a decent song

Fuck historical relevance and canonization. Say "the 100 most historically relevant hip hop songs" if that's what you're going for. If you say "best", a concerted effort should be made at listing the BEST. What they're really trying to do here is quantify the most POPULAR rap songs, in a completely random order that will keep people watching.

Oh, I'm not expecting Madlib or something. This is VH1, that would be silly. I'm not expecting anything crazy. They could at least put "My Name Is..." or "The Real Slim Shady" there, though. "Stan" is just so lame and melodramatic and unrepresentative.

And actually, historical relevance/canonization is why I'd leave something like Eminem off. He's sort of "the end" of a certain avenue of hip-hop, whereas a lot of influential people were left off. (ie, tons of Death Row shit, but no Wu-Tang solo stuff, no Ultramagnetic MCs/Kool Keith, no "Let Me Clear My Throat," lame picks for Jay-Z and Beastie Boys tracks, etc)

oh man, i didn't even realize that, everything that you mention should be there. no wu-tang? that's crazy, not only are they insanely good, they were a fucking empire for a while.
and i agree with andrew as well, i guess what i'm saying is that i understand why some songs that are on the list are on the list, not that i think they should be there.

To be clear, "C.R.E.A.M." is on there, I was just pointing to a disparity. You have NWA and Dre and Snoop and Ice Cube and Pac but no Wu-Tang solo stuff.
Really though I'm being a bitch, this is one of the better VH1 lists, all things told.
Leaving off "Let Me Clear My Throat" is just wrong, though.

It's #100 though.
To put that in context, "Baby Got Back" is #17, "U Can't Touch This" is #26, "Hot in Herre" is #36. I could go on.

I was mostly ok with the list, in VH1 list sort of way, until I saw #63.
Rollin’ With Kid N Play is not the 63rd best anything.

I wouldnt put it at #17, but I have to say I do think that "Baby Got back" might make my top 100. I actually just really like that song.
