so for all the trash i've talked about indians (once, that their driving is generally of less then stellar caliber since one almost killed my mum), i've been bonding with cell phone customer service reps and cab drivers over my flight to delhi on weds. it's like we're brethren now! who's racist now, bitches?

holy crow, the way drivers wheel through the city here is unbelievable! i still have the constant honking going in my head. how many times i thought i'd spend my last moments before meeting my maker in an autorickshaw - tuk tuk - today is more fingers then i've got, lost track. why do i still sound racist? the genius who recently solved that 350-year-old 'unsolvable' math problem was an indian kid, right? whatever man.

It's not a math problem, it's a physics problem.

Maybe it's because you're describing your experiences with Indian people solely in terms of the hoariest stereotypes imaginable (tech support! cab drivers! good at math!) instead of, you know, describing interactions with actual, flesh-and-blood, individual people.

what do you know? until recently the only indian people in my life were cab drivers and cell phone customer service reps, those individual people i interacted with. what's less authentic about these folks, just because they aren't bucking trends? what kind of weirdo are you that unless somebody is doing something astonishing he or she doesn't count? typing this from dharamsala, i'm in my bliss - coming here was the best decision i ever made. funny thing you mention the math thing... the indian woman sitting next to me on the flight here was a math teacher from cambridge headed home for the summer. and what? is there a problem?

i love it here, get to meet the dalai lama in the morning.

You understand that those cab drivers and tech support workers are like, actual people, though, right, with their own hopes and concerns and interior lives? Their Indian identity may or may not be important to them; they are not magical entities there to teach you about What It Means To Be Indian during your 5 minutes interactions with them, and taking those interactions that way is, you know, racist as fuck

what are you talking about? i never said anything about what it means to be anything, think it's funny when people fit into social profiles but don't give it too much thought. the last phone rep i talked to before i left invited me to come to her house for dinner while visiting, which amazed me, but doesn't seem so out of order now that i'm experiencing a different sort of social protocol. i still don't get what you mean? americans.

you're not doing much to break out of the 'americans are stupid' stereotype. canadians are supposed to be polite so i'm just letting the rebel out to play, let's be different.

how rude.

another interesting thing i've discovered is that bhugsu, where i'm living for june, is a common destination for isrealis. as soon as guys and gals finish their military service they often head here or south america, cheap destinations, to hippy right the fuck out and all of a sudden i don't mind at all. bang on your bongos and tie feathers in your hair! come to the dalai lama lectures and learn to macrame 'free tibet' bracelets! oh, the irony... however, i can stand behind this.
