I love how some of my students are all OMG THIS PROCESS IS SO USELESS when it's the same process that every single video production on earth uses.

The downside, of course, is the bit where it involves being in school, but given the world as it is, it seems likely to be a good plan. So we'll see.
Turned out to be a good plan for us. Our student loans have given us more money than I was making last year, and sure, we'll have to pay it back, but it's still the best sort of debt to have, and with Erin's pharmacy job paying the big bucks as soon as she graduates, it won't take us long to get back on top.

The idea of "the best sort of debt to have" strikes me as pretty emotionally equivalent to "the best sort of hepatitis to have."

If you were productive and accomplished some good in the process of getting hepatitis, and if the hepatitis would go away according to a schedule of your own choosing, and if it contributed to future resistance to hepatitis and other diseases... Then I could see where you're going with that, andrew.

Hahaha. (I feel the need to make a disclaimer that in real life, medical knowledge and random trivia make up only a tiny bit of my conversations.) Yeah, so in this case, it would be Hep A debt I believe. Still not good, but a less likely to fuck you up long term as you can in fact recover from that.

My point was merely that even getting hepatitis A still pretty much sucks.
But I found that digression pretty entertaining nonetheless.

No offense, TSKS, but you've made it clear that you have very firmly opted out of the entire financial credit system as much as you can. That's fine, but it's not the mean; especially for anyone who has any interest in any kind of graduate (or undergraduate, in most cases) studies and isn't independently wealthy.

I'm nervous in the very presence of credit cards, but borrowing money for school always seemed like the most benign sort of debt.

Oh boy i take this study group and I just had to take the first one and its a tiny group but it was still absolutely terrifying. Students seemed cool though, I hope they come again next week.

I am learning about Singapore and North Korea and it is interesting! I'm glad I took this comparative politics course, it's neat. The first proper class the lecturer showed us a bit of

I hate group assignments. If fuck ups are made and a bad grade is got, I want to have only myself to blame. And if good grades are got, I want to have all the credit. I am not a team player. But that said, the team I've got for this stupid aassignment look like they'll be fine to work with.

I've always felt this way, too, but this semester in library school has been group-work intensive, and I would've had a faaaar more difficult time of it otherwise. There has been a lot of tech-stuff like database building, web design, e-journal research, usability testing...just a whole lot of confusing overwhelming shit that a few of the professionals I've been teamed up with have experience dealing with. I have strengths in the writing and editing and citing areas, and so far we've all managed to complement each other nicely.
So there's hope in the format. I should mention too that my courses are online, so the group work takes place in chatrooms and over the phone, which would seem to make things even more challenging, but again, it works.

Let's hope your online group projects yield better results than LPTJ's.

School just started for some of us who are on the quarter system. After last term's misery I'm taking the cushiest courseload I possibly can. I'm taking cinematography, directing for the camera, and Beethoven. Yes, I am so scarred that I have opted to take a music history course, so I don't have to be in the same building as the bad, scary computers.

I loved the quarter system.
I'm gearing up for grad school applications, but first: the GRE again! I'm actually pretty excited.

The quarter system is fun and exciting when what you're learning comes to you fairly easily. We hit After Effects and those noodly fine-tuning bits of screenwriting and I basically wanted to die.
Isn't the GRE for admission to grad school? I thought you were in grad school already? Apologies if I'm mixing you up with somebody else, which is highly likely. Or are you switching to another field of study?

Nah, I decided to work for a year or two. Which has been a great fucking experience; making great money, shoring up an already badass resume. I just really miss academia, and I always planned to get my masters, at least.

What are you going to go into, Miles? Are you gearing up to submit an application in the fall for 2010/2011?
