organising digital photos?
«

anyone have any recommendations for software to use to organise my photographs? i'm not talking about uploading them all to a website, but rather a desktop application. ideally i want to be able to sort by date/month/year, other exif data items, and assign tags to any images i like.
i started making something in access ages ago which will work if i finish it but is perhaps a tiny bit slow (plus y'know, doing more database making when you get home from work isn't really where it is at), so any recommendations will be gratefully received.

A few of my friends use Picasa and seem to like it
iPhoto's alright but it gets way laggy/borderline unusable once you get up to a thousand or so photos.

Like I've said before, our office manager thought it would be cute to give the environmental compliance people Mac Minis. Once you're above 3,000 pics you have to clear out the library or the program just freezes.

Oh dude these are the Power PC Minis with 768 mb. Even my aging Powerbook G4 runs circles around them
My main complaint about iPhoto as a program is the awkwardness/simplicity of the editing tools. Unless I'm doing simple resizes or crops, I usually feel compelled to work with each picture in Seashore or even Graphic Converter

Yeah I never do any edits with it. For ease of use and organization I think it's great, though.

i have more than 3000 photos. i do not have a decent machine.
i have a file structure, but this doesn't allow me to view all my party pics at once, or all my condensation-on-glass pics at once, or all my black and white pictures at once, etc.
i don't do edits.
i will give picasa a try.
gracias.

yes, i now must pretend to be interested in digital photograph organisation.
i personally use picasa, and i do so because i am in fact google's bitch, and it matches my gmail/chrome/igoogle/google earth combo. but it is pretty good, it can touch the photos up and stuff. just make sure you don't let it trawl your whole computer, cause if you're me you'll end up with 7000 double-ups and a whole bunch of porn amidst family memories.
