You don't have to talk about the performance or anything...but please relate how stoked you are to meet him. I can't imagine how nervous/elated/terrified you must be.

I'm excited to play but the whole "meeting Jandek" part of it, to be honest, isn't really on my radar. I will be surprised if we exchange many/any words at all, I'm there to make music & I'm excited for that part.

As someone who has seen his performance already, it will truly be a unique experience.  I actually feel excited for you.  Wish I could come down and see it (or your concert in Somerville, stupid night class).

Okay I don't want to shoot down the whole "Jandek must be insane" thing but...

yeah, actually I do. Having worked with him for over three years as a writer and having produced a concert for him in Denver last summer can I please say this?

JANDEK IS A NORMAL HUMAN BEING. A great guy. Super swell. The craziest story about Jandek the person is that there is no story. Really. It's all on the records if you care to listen.

John is right on the money here - it's about the music. The day will go something like this: the band will show up and set up their equipment around noon. Half an hour later the Corwood Rep(aka Jandek, though really everybody is Jandek for the purpose of shows) will arrive with a folder full of lyrics and his instrument of the night (in this case, guitar). Everyone will work REALLY REALLY hard for three or four hours turning about two hours worth of ideas into a coherant concert. Then he'll go rest for a bit and the band eats, or rests, or whatever. Then the show. Just like that. It's an awesome musical experience, and I wish I could be there, but circumstances (and cash) don't allow it. Best of luck and have fun. It's just a show, people! A unique, fascinating event but just a show all the same.

Henceforth let it be resolved only to refer to the artist in question as 'Jandek(s)'

I didn't mean to make sound like a freak or anything, more of an idol.   Like playing with Stevie Wonder or something.  I feel like there is alot of pressure.  I don't know, I'm a person who tend to get star struck.

Sorry if I came off defensively - I'm just used to people wanting to discover the worst about this musician, and I suppose the Pfork article put me a bit on edge. I'm often reminded of the Jandek List discussion right after Katy Vine printed her "Jandek Interview" in 1999. Somebody doubted her finding of a really nice guy who shared beers with friends and so on, and said "if you'd found a bagboy from Safeway, I'd believe you." The idea that the only person who could make this music must barely be hanging on to sanity.

I suppose I'm still defending the idea of separation between art and artist.  Not that the "legend" doesn't have its place and all that...just a note not to confuse it with the man behind the curtain.

I'm with you on that.  It's such a tired narrative when it comes musicians who choose to be more recluse.

also - your quoting of my post put me through several pangs grammar embarrassment.

NAMEDROPPING

So John, BPB, the entire cast of 30Rock and I are sitting here thinking that your story is wholly unremarkable.
