My computer has a USB and everything, but it is old old old, like
refurbished from a scrap heap in 2003 and is probably on its death bed
and that is why it crashes every time I try to look at a PDF document old.
Blucas, "scared" is the wrong word, but, like, what if I get it and it doesn't work would it be a pain in the ass to mail it back would they even take it back, I like to hold things before I buy them, etc.

My parents' computer did the same thing before they got a new one a few weeks ago.

Part of the reason why my laptop is so shitty is because I have so little free space (mostly due to mp3s)(and I have discussed this here before and I know that I have to have 10% free or whatever) and I just need to go through all the music on it and sort out what I don't listen to and what I do listen to. I think I have an entire Usher album on there. But it has lasted me this long and I intend to stick with it until it dies. I do not want to blow an entire tax return on one thing. We have BEEN through WARS, my laptop and I. And I also think that if I permanently switch some music from my laptop to an mp3 player (hence the wanting one with a huge capacity) I think maybe it might make the laptop healthier?

Wasn't your parents comp the one running Windows 98? You're proving his point, dude.

Sarah, simply moving your music from your laptop to your mp3 player is not the best idea. Maybe invest in an external HDD as well?

So I got one.
It is a classic iPod, and it is 120 GB, and it was really reasonable for what I got plus it has a two-year warranty, and it is small and shiny and I love it a lot. Thanks for your help, dudes.

Sounds like a good score. I have the 80gb flavor and what I've noticed is that for all the failures iTunes may have, it's still better than MusicMatch.

Okay, so next paycheck I'm planning on doing two things: 1.) joining a gym, 2.) buying an iPod. The two things are somewhat related. So I'm really thinking the Classic, it having by far the best cost-to-storage-size ratio, but the fact that one of the times I'll be using it the most is while exercising makes me a little reluctant about getting something with, y'know, an actual hdd in it. So that'd put me at the iPod Touch, which is super expensive BUT full of all kinds of super awesome features BUT not enough storage space BUT not going to get all shaken up and start skipping while I'm like, on the elliptical or whatever. Ultimately I am probably more interested in being able to carry most of my music library with at all times than anything else, but I would like to hear what you guys think. So please, help me with my first world problems.

Bah. Which gym are you thinking of joining? All the equipment at my gym has places to put iPods and water bottles and stuff (I think it's pretty standard) and mine has not skipped at all ever.

Just buy the touch, dude. 8GB of music is still a fucking hell of a lot, and unless you're terribly erratic in your listening habits it's more than enough to sustain you while away from your home machine. I just swap shit out every couple of days or whatever and it's good. And for $200, you're basically getting a little computer: web browser, email, tons of toys and useless apps that are amusing and such. Plus you can watch movies on it if you're inclined. They're just super fun, and the only advantage the classic has over them is storage capacity. Plus super light and thin and solid state, as you mentioned, so great for working out/moving as long as you have a sleeve/case.
I know I sound like a crazy Apple zealot, but I'm still fucking around with my 8 gigger on a daily basis and having fun with it.

Miles, how many of the apps for it are free?
I think I am in part just looking for an excuse to buy a Touch, though it is true that my listening habits ARE pretty erratic, and I'm really into being able to listen to ANYTHING whenever I want.
NNY - Snap, 'cause it's a block away from my house, so it'd be pretty easy to go before work and stuff.

As soon as you jailbreak it, all of them. I've spent maybe $20 in the app store since I've had the thing, and a few of those purchases were extremely useful apps that I use on a daily basis and absolutely didn't mind paying for*, like the NYC transit map. But if you hack the thing, there's mad ridiculous shit out there for it.
*and at least one great app that's retarded but fun which turns your ipod into a touchpad for your desktop or laptop. It works over the wireless and it's like the best remote control for a computer ever.

Oh shit there's a fucking 32 gig one now.
I really can't afford that though.
Fuuuuuuuuck, yeah, I do really want a Touch.
How do you "jailbreak" it?

You firmware flash it. Which basically involves downloading something and following some simple instructions.
But yeah if you can swing it for the 32GB, even better. I'm just saying that the low-end 8GB model is fucking awesome considering what you get for two hundo.

For what it's worth, I'd be a bit more wary about recommending the iPod Touch. I've had mine for a few months now, and while it's been working without problems and all that, I find myself less and less sure that it really was worth the extra investment over, say, an iPod Nano. I'm not actually around unprotected wireless networks often enough to really get much use out of any of its functionalities with the exception of music player, agenda, and alarm clock. And while it has been doing all of the above quite reliably over the last months, it's also a bit bulkier and heavier than I'd like my mp3 player to be, and a bit too expensive for me to ever stop worrying about breaking it. I'm not saying don't do it, because as far as I can tell it does its thing very well indeed, just think about how much usage you'd really get out of it. If you end up using the internet facilities as little as I do, you might be able to find something cheaper and lighter that fulfills your needs just as well.

Well, a Nano isn't really that much cheaper. But yes, if you don't want all that extra functionality there's certainly no reason to purchase it. I just like tech toys a lot, is all.
