Add another $50 and you could have 10x the storage space.

I've had the 30G for three years now, and it's been great, really. But I've finally reached the end of my rope with the checking and unchecking of boxes in iTunes. Yes, 30 gigs is more than enough music to keep anybody busy at one time...unless you suddenly want to hear Talkie Walkie, which you left off last time you synced your iPod. I'd save so much time and sanity if I just got a new 120G iPod and put every fucking thing in my library on it. Bang, problem solved. I'd never have to uncheck another godforsaken box.

i'd tell you to get a sony but i probably already made that recommendation in this thread. their current range is pretty excellent looking and sounding. they don't really do high capacity though.

i'm dreading the day my mp3 player dies. i think i'll go back to carrying a couple of compact discs around with me.

Hah, I've probably got 200 gigs of music, so that wouldn't solve anything for me.

When I first bought my iPod, I had this strategy for getting all my stuff into iTunes while cutting all the fat I could. So I ended up taking solid albums and picking the 5 or 6 best songs to put on my iPod. When I realized what a terrible idea this was (I never want to listen to songs, just albums), I was in the middle of the alphabet somewhere and I had to start over. I finally caught back up and pressed onward, but lost interest around the Ts on my Pop/Rock shelf. That means I've still got to add T-Z in Pop/Rock, as well as most of my metal, electronica, jazz, box sets, CD-Rs, and soundtracks. My guess is if I added everything together, I'd be around 200 and probably over it, but I would guess that you'd be at least twice that.

Probably! Most of my CDs/cassettes/LPs aren't even available to me as digital files.

So I got the Sony 16gig Walkman. Happy with it so far. I don't have as much music as most of you, so the size seems good. The fm tuner works well, which is an asset with the UNC, Duke, and NCSU student stations all in range.
Cost was about half that of a comparably-sized iPod, we'll see whether that proves to be dollar foolish.

i've got a cute little shuffle that looks like this:

the problem is that i lost the earbuds, which are like, $60 to replace and i'm hardly pleased with not knowing what is playing when i miss the screen (ooh, the mystery!) so it's not like it ever did me much good except for looking fine... hoping to get new headphones and fall back in love shortly.

andrew: sounds like you could use one of these.

There is no conceivable reason on earth why you should use the iPhone earbuds. Get a decent pair.

I'm guessing that's the newest generation of the Shuffle, in which case that's not true, because basically all of the controls are built into the earphones: the voice-over function for track names, as well as the ability to skip tracks or change the volume. So yeah, there are all sorts of conceivable reasons why you'd use the Apple earbuds for them.

As for conceivable reasons why you'd buy an mp3 player that puts such drastic limitations on what you can do with it, well, beats me.

Holy shit, that's among the most evil things I've heard re: technology, given the almost certain fact that their sound quality are still going to be shitty, shitty, shitty.

CBS: Oh, it's not the inability to convert the files that's the problem. It's hard drive space. If I got my desktop running again, and put a terabyte hard drive in it, I could rip everything (if I were willing to expend the time on it), but it's really not a big enough deal that I want to bother. Most of the stuff I want to listen to at any given time is out there on file-sharing networks, so I don't have to actually rip it myself. The rest of the stuff, again, if I got my desktop running again I could rip it no problem. So yeah, I'm just bein' lazy.

Right, I'm only half-joking though. I routinely nuke gigs of media whenever I'm running low on space, cuz I know I can get it back whenever I want it.

i'm dreading the day my mp3 player dies. i think i'll go back to carrying a couple of compact discs around with me.

either hilariously or tragically or both (depending i suppose on both how you're inclined to look at these things and how much you like me) it took a mere twelve days for this prophecy to be fulfilled.

i guess i'll try to fix it, fail, and then cry.

hey hi
I have been using my iPod with Winamp for the past few months, because when I put all my songs on an external hard drive a few months ago iTunes acted like neither they nor my iPod existed even though I followed the steps on how to back your shit up on iTunes to the letter. Winamp has been pretty straightforward and easy, but twice now it has overwritten preexisting playlists with stuff I'm adding. I put a new playlist on it and that playlist appears, but then I go to a different one and it says I'm playing that one but it's actually playing the one I just added, if that makes sense, it is 8 a.m. This has only happened when I have added songs that I've ripped from CDs. Has anyone experienced this with iPod/Winamp? Is there anything I can do to get the old ones back?
