The American football offseason thread

Yeah, I had to do it, and this is why:
Broncos agree to trade Cutler
Dudes, this is huge. Who will take him? What will the Broncos do for a QB? Holy shit!

My brain is only big enough for one piece of football information right now, and that is the Volunteers have a new head coach. I still can't believe it.

Well, you had to figure it was kind of inevitable when they fired the old one, right?

I'm choosing to frame the scenario in positive terms, i.e. we didn't lose our coach, we just got a new one.

I don't like Jay Cutler, but I'd hesitantly throw some provisional support behind him should he end up with a terminally hemmed-in crew like the Browns, Bengals or Lions. Lift one of these teams up, please.
edit: not like the Lions have anything to offer anyone, let alone the Den Bronx. Robocop, maybe.

Chicago media is all over this Jay Cutler thing, for, against, and those without any point who just rant about shit. Though there's less of that now that Jay Mariotti is gone.
(by for and against, I mean for and against the Bears picking him up as a potential upgrade to the mighty neckbearded hero Kyle Orton.)

Shit, I want him in Washington! Although the rumor at one point was that Cooley would get traded for him, which would make me want to shoot someone, so maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

The hype around Palmer right now is that he's finally healthy and has his swagger back. Time will tell whether it's true or not, but I think the dude's undervalued a little.

Even is irrelevant, because it's more or less impossible. Cutler's a really talented young QB, aka the single most valuable commodity in football. Promise me he doesn't get hurt or become a head case, and I'll give you my next 5 first-round picks for him.
The Broncos announcement makes it clear that they know this and will take 50 cents on the dollar.

I do like the Cutler-to-Browns scenario ESPN put up.

I'd rather have Carson Palmer + x draft picks than Brady Quinn + x draft picks

Joe, those are definitely worthy subjects. I feel that the Cassel-to-Chiefs trade is one that the Chiefs got the better end of, and I'm skeptical that Brady will return to former glories. We'll see, though--Peyton Manning was back on his A game by week 6 or so, so I could be wrong. TO going to the Bills is fascinating to me. I can't imagine him and Trent Edwards getting along, but on the other hand, who else is Edwards going to throw to? Are there even any other receivers on that team?

Jim, your team just acquired an actual franchise quarterback.
BREAKING: Cutler traded to Bears
Quote
The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.
To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 (18th overall) and 2010, along with a third-round pick (84th overall) in 2009.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a fifth-round pick (140th overall) in 2009. That pick was acquired by the Broncos from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade for wide receiver Keary Colbert.
Gotta say, even when I extrapolated out to the top half-dozen or so teams I could see him ending up with, this was still not one of them.

Wow.
Interesting that the Bears finally broke down and anted up for a high-end QB. If they had done this three years ago, they'd have a Super Bowl trophy, and Peyton Manning wouldn't.
That said, the emergence of Kyle Orton, legit NFL QB, was the single most surprising thing I saw last year, so it'll be really interesting to see how he fares in Denver. I'll be rooting for him, honestly.

I really wish Peyton Manning didn't have a Super Bowl trophy. GAAAAH, h8.
Mike Vrabel being traded made me super sad, he was totally my favorite Pat (with Bruschi right behind) and I'm sick to freakin' death of Tom Brady being in the news all the freakin' time for anything BUT football. Just freakin' play, Tommy Boy. UGH.
Also, really interested in the Cutler era for the Bears. It would be fun to be able to kind of get into it around here, but the Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman eras weren't exactly inspiring.
