I have no idea what causes it, but when I have something plugged into one USB port and my audio interface plugged in, I get the world's most unbelievable ground hum.

So, um, I just opened iTunes and there's nothing in it. Like, none of the 15,000 or so songs that are supposed to be in it.

are the files gone off the hard drive too? I've had sporadic issues with stuff disappearing from my iTunes library, but never had the actual files themselves vaporize

Yeah, but fuck, it's worse than I thought. It's erased all the customizations I've put in over the past 3 years. All the genre labels I've created, all the groupings, basically it's a blank slate iTunes.

This fucking sucks like the big time.

I don't get it. No provocation. I mean, I powered off my computer today, just to give it a breather, but it didn't freeze up or anything, and I try to do this once a week or every two weeks or so, so it's nothing new.

It's a good thing I've got more important shit to worry about right now.

Whaddya mean?  People who got the magic Grand Central free blogger invitation have just been asked to take some kind of action in preparing for the Google Voice launch.  I didn't open the email, but it looks like the service is coming very soon.

Depends on the laptop.  Some are really easy, some are a bitch, but in general anyone with basic mechanical skills can do it.

What kind of laptop?

Yeah, that's just the screen, so you're going to have to remove all the plastics and shit.  It'll be a pain in the ass, but if you can use a screwdriver, you can do it.

keep a step by step photo diary. not for our amusement, but for when you have to put the thing back together again in the right order.
