yeah, that was some bedroom-recording-from-1992-worthy defeatism there, wasn't it?

Firefox, and it does look as though I can run Task Manager.

also, x-posted and left this behind on the last page. so it doesn't get lost:

Not that technical, but can anyone tell me where to get clear double cd cases?  The ones that are as thick as a normal cd case, not the old school ones.  My Burma reissue cases are ruined and they've been sitting in a neat pile for more than year and somehow Vs is scratched already.

Never seen 'em at best buy, the dollar store, record stores, etc.

ieatrats i think you can get something like that on amazon, a google search yielded this link, the "Fellowes Model 98320 Double Jewel Cases (10-Count, Black)" appears to be what you're looking for

adf, check to see if it's running as a firefox plugin, Tools | Add-Ons

Otherwise click on the Processes tab in the Task Manager, look for something like AdobeUpd or similar and see if it'll let you End Process on that bitch

Aw thanks that's nice.

thanks jimbo, I don't know why I found it hard to come up with a search query like "double jewel case".  I swear it's actually because I became a mysql administrator doling out database information today when before this morning I didn't know what mysql was and my brain is mush.

The right-click on my mouse no longer works.  Could this be a computer problem, or is the mouse just probably fucked?

The last time I wanted to make movies out of flash or live streams (which was forfuckingever ago), I used a desktop recorder (I forget what it was called). You opened the program, selected a rectangle of space in which to record, and hit start & stop. I would look for something like that if the converters aren't working.

I've been using Apple Mail with Gmail on my home computer (POP) and with my university webmail on my work computer (also POP) - it's been working okay for years, but lately, while it's still been working fine for the work address, Mail seems to fail to download 50 to 70% of my Gmail messages. Any idea what could be causing this? Should I change something in the Gmail settings? Or reinstall Mail? Or since I'm planning to upgrade to Snow Leopard at some point in the next few days, wait until I do that to see if anything has changed?

Try running through your Apple Mail settings with a fine tooth comb and comparing them to the ones supplied by Google. I'm not sure what caused this, but one of the server settings on my copy of Apple Mail went weird recently and I suspect it caused some trouble with sending messages.

I did try that unsuccesfully, but last night I found out that the explanation for the recent screwiness was much more simple: someone who's been using my old laptop accidentally turned on Mail a few days ago and left it open. Which explains why it didn't download the messages on my Imac, since they had already been downloaded on the Ibook.

I'll be interested to see what happens. From the teardowns on iFixit, they don't look like they're particularly fixable.

What happens is I took it to the nearest Apple Reseller and they told me they'd take it in, but it would cost a service charge, since I didn't buy it from them. At first I politely said thanks and left, but then I decided I was too lazy to go through the online/phone route (I'd bought it from the online Apple store) and went back. First thing they did was a look at the indicator strip, telling me that it was blue, and that maybe I don't want to pay for their service charge if most likely it'll just result in me getting the iPod back the exact same way.

The thing is, for all I know, there are two instances in which the indicator thing could have turned blue, and both are pretty fucking ludicrous:
a. the one time I took it out of my pocket while it was raining because I was cycling and a song I didn't like came on. It can't have been raining TOO hard, because I was cycling in the rain and the song playing bothered me enough to slow down and take my iPod out of my pocket, so, y'know.

b. The time when the headphone jack first started acting up, and I tried whether one of those air duster thingies you use for keyboards would help (it didn't). I remember that, when looking at it, I noticed something white in the back of the USB slot. So, thinking it was a piece of tissue caught up there or something, I blew some air in there as well. In retrospect, the white thing may have been the indicator strip, and the air duster was just moist enough to make it go away (i.e. turn dark)? This would be the most ironic, stupid thing I've ever done.

Either way, it kind of sounds like I'm fucked.

I can't speak for the integrity of iPod cases, but in the case of at least two cell phones, those strips seem incredibly sensitive. A customer service rep told my friend that it probably changed color because he kept the phone in his pocket, possibly on damp days. I've never brought a phone in, but the indicator on my last one had changed color by the first time I cleaned it without ever being dropped in the toilet or used in the shower.

Guys, the network in the house I've moved in is giving me some rather bizarre problems. We're all on a wireless network, an access point attached to a cable modem (Motorola SBV5121). The thing is, if I'm the first person on the network, nobody else can connect (Windows reports a connection, but it lies: you don't receive any packets from the network at all, have a nonsensical IP address and all DHCP requests time out). And if the other guy is the first on, I can't connect, though sometimes the girl can.

I've pretty much narrowed the problem down to the modem, because I get the same results when I connect straight into the modem. It's so bad that if I connect through the wireless, then unplug the wireless and put another computer straight into the modem (through either ethernet or USB), the second computer can't get a connection. I've checked, the modem is supposed to handle up to 31 computers through its 1 ethernet port with the help of a hub, and I imagine that a wireless access spot is going to be at least a hub.

Any advice, LPTJ?

Possible solution:

1. Travel to Berlin
2. Set fire to Reichstag
3. ???
4. IP conflict resolved

Just today when I introduced myself somebody said that I shared a first name with a Dutch national hero. I guessed who in one.

That's ridiculous. If those sensors are that sensitive, with all the condensation that collects on mine when I put it in my pocket, mine should have died years ago.

Well, I don't suppose any of that does any damage to the device, it just has the convenient effect of voiding the warranty, y'know?

I'll probably still give the Apple Store a call to see what would happen if I sent it in anyway (the guys at the shop today didn't seem to consider it entirely hopeless, just unlikely, so they advised against paying their service charge), but I don't have much hope left.

Maybe try a bit more aggressive tone with them? Did you explain that there could be no possible way it would have been water damaged? Would they refund you the service charge if they got it open and didn't find any evidence of water damage?

I mean, it's pretty obvious that it isn't water damage creating the problem here. If it was, you'd have worse problems than an intermittent headphone jack.

i'm pretty sure that, for certain other companies at least, once that indicator changes colour they don't really give a shit whether it was actually water damage that caused your problem. it's kind of bullshit.
