So downloading via usenet, I can pull about 7 parts at once each at ~150kb. Is that pretty standard for a basic urban cable connection?

There are a lot of variables here (TCP slow-start what ho!) but basically yeah.

Random ipod question:  I just took mine off usb and as soon as I unplugged it it made a horrific high-pitched squealing noise for about 30 seconds.  Then the screen went off for a second and came back on.  It appears to be functioning normally now.

Note that at first I assumed it was music but verified that it was not indeed from the phones.

Also note that it was safely removed, but itunes never lets me eject it (files may be in use warning) so I shut down itunes, then use windows hardware remover guy.  Also note I can't view error messages (if there was one) because my screen is broken.

Should I be concerned?

I would assume that the noise you heard was mechanical and your iPod is not long for this world.

I think that's why I had to write so much text.

I can't remember the numbers of the stages of denial and bargaining, but 3 years on an object with a miniature hard drive that ideally you're supposed to have for maximum a year before you abuse it to death or you "upgrade" I guess means...

I can't say it!

It was very mechanical.

Does anybody have any idea how to go about erasing/imaging the newest macbook? The redesign eliminated firewire, and I use firewire to erase and reimage at least 10 devices a day, so this is kind of hugely important if we are to start using them as our product.

I've been googling for a while and haven't come up with a concrete solution. I know you can boot from an external USB drive, but can I then use that to reimage the internal HD? This sounds the most promising at the moment. I'll have to coerce product development into making a bootable image for me to test it.

Apple is all, "yo wireless is the greatest thing ever" and I'm like, "but it is also SO GODDAMN SLOW it will take six hours to do this instead of 20 minutes." This is the sound of me weeping for my job.

You can boot from USB, so the easiest thing would probably be to make a .dmg of the image and then stick that on a bootable USB. Then if you boot from your external you can use the dmg as a source and the internal as a destination.

You can also take the drives out pretty easily too if you're working from a station.

I figured that about the USB drives. That's looking pretty good at the moment, and NetBoot/NetInstall is looking like second place, but our mac server is dead and will need to be resuscitated.

Taking the drives out would be way too time-consuming.

Hey nerdy peeps, I need your help.

For the past few days I've been having some annoying internet problems. Everything will be fine and then I go to a site and it won't load. No error message, just a plank page and nothing in the status bar. Like right now I'm typing this but when I hit 'post' it probably won't go anywhere and I'll have to refresh or press post 294737 times. My internet connection is fine, I've reset my wireless twice, the main computer in my household works excellent. Weird thing is that I get these errors in Firefox (latest version), Google Chrome and Safari, but not IE. I refuse to use IE, and would normally expect this problem from them. Is it possible that this is caused by the new version of Firefox or is there something else going on?

Diagnose my computer/internet problems please and thank you

When I get that it's from my wireless connection flaking out under a lot of traffic. Refreshes normally fix it. But it sounds like you've tested for that.

yeah, I'm thinking that I'm doomed. Other people have been using the wireless and while they say the internet connection has been shoddy at times, they haven't experienced what I have, so it seems to be a browser problem.

just kidding, it's still doing it!

I uninstalled firefox and went back to an older version and thought maybe that was it. I know it's not the internet connection because it kept happening at school and I've never had any connection problems through their wireless network.

So this turned out to work SO AWESOMELY that I ordered three more external drives yesterday and I'm getting rid of my in-house machines and putting them back in general use. Eeeeexcellent.

I have a Netgear WGR614 wireless router and it has stopped working. It acknowledges the modem it is connected to with the Internet light but the wireless light does not come on. This happened late Thu night or early Fri morn.  We have shitty electrics in our house so it's possible the house broke it.  How can I fix? (have tried switching on and off; hitting)

these are more questions than solutions, but they might help identify exactly where the problem is:

have you tried connecting to it with an ethernet cable? do you get internet when you do that? do you have access to another computer you could use to check that it's definitely the router's wireless that's broken and not that of your machine (can your machine see the router but just not connect? can it see any other routers?)? the wireless light usually only comes on when something is accessing the wireless connection, so it being off doesn't necessarily mean that it's the router that's broken.

do you have the user manual? (if not, googling "WGR614 manual" gives results for a couple of revisions of that router model). there should be a router "homepage" you can navigate to which sits on the router and not on the internet. if you can get there, you'll know that your connection to the router is working but you're then failing to reach the internet. if you can get there via ethernet but not by wireless (and you know it's the router not the machine that's broken) there may also be stuff you can change there.
