All NYC savvy, your attention please!

So, I'm in the works of making the cheapest trip possible to NYC from DC this weekend to check out The Gates in Central Park and hopefully see a concert. Could anyone direct me to an inexpensive (read dirt cheap or free) place to sleep in the city? I'm comfortable anywhere, including stranger's homes and sketchy hostels. I'll be there Friday and Saturday night. Help keep money in my wallet!
Thanks!
Hugs and kisses,
Frances

Hostelling International at 103rd and Amsterdam is far from sketchy. $38 a night for non members, very nice facilities (it might be the nicest hostel you'll ever stay in) and usually there are interesting people to meet. There's a small cafe, locker rentals, and a nice louge with Internet access.

Oh no no, I don't plan on taking up either occupation, ever.
Let's see, about me, what a wonderful subject to expond upon...
I'm an art history undergrad in DC. Modern art is my favorite, hence my fevor to see Cristo/Jean Claude's project in Central Park. I'm not too much of a studio talent, but I make paper collages and cards for friends as my main creative outlet. For my career, I'm anticipating designing art museum programs for kids and adults.
I have minor dreams of rock stardom, limited to open mic nights and boombox recordings. Some of my favorite musicans: Bjork(insert bizarre vocal talents), Bob Dylan(insert plucky folk musicans), and Animal Collective (insert intelligent experimental musicans).
My mother is an Italian cooking queen, and my father is an Irish delightful goof--I've inherited both traits. My fiance lives in New Orleans, and we will blissfully reunite this summer. *sigh*
I like helping people, and I am a generally too trusting of a lone girl. For instance, I invited another girl to camp out in my room during a Smithsonian opening after her car broke down outside the library where I work. I knew her for about seven minutes before making the offer. Another time, I carpooled/spilt costs with a dude, with whom I had only spoken on the phone, to see a concert in Philly. So far, I've been lucky to end up unharmed and better off, and I like it that way.
I shop at thrift stores, cut my own locks, look in the used bin, ride my bike, and buy ancient textbook editions: I'm a spendthrift to the budgeted max. If you can offer a sleeping spot, that's all I need. I make every promise to be a respectful and docile tenant; and my height bearly tops five feet, so I won't take up much space. And if dollars aren't your kick, I'd be happy to cook, clean, babysit, make a collage, or offer a place in DC, in exchange.
So Crystal, and the rest of the online community, that's me. Any takers?!
With smiles,
Frances

Sorry, I thought I wrote that in there; I'm a girl. As a side note, unisex names such as mine are often sexualized(?) with the feminine "e", or masculine "i" ending.
I am considering leaving from DC on Friday afternoon and returning Sunday. A resting spot for Friday and Saturday nights would be quite wonderful. But if your work or other plans conflict, I understand if you'd rather just manage one night, if any.
If you are seriously considering hostessing me, THANK YOU!

I'm on the same schedule, actually.
When you're at the gates, keep an eye out for a big dude with mutton chops and long hair, and a girl with blue highlights. Hell, I could even wear my Last Plane t-shirt.

Hey sounds cool. Maybe we'll meet up, the project is definitly pretty extensive, but hey! ya never know. I gave a brief description of myself above, additionally, I have short reddish brown hair, combed to the front and flilpped on the sides. I'll probably be clad in vintage attire, most likely a frock coat the same color as my locks. Here's to bumming into each other! Cheers.

Have a good time and report back... so far everybody I've talked to has found the show quite interesting, and says it's got a very different quality in the evening than in the morning.

Quite possibly the different quality invovles the blanketless homeless dismantling of the fabric from the frames during the night...
Just kidding, that's not true at all.
But yeah, I've heard the same too. I plan on attempting to capture the Gates at a few of different times during my stay. I'll be sure to take plenty of photos and share.

Ok, well, I guess I won't be there.
The person I was going to meet and stay with is apparently sick, so we had to take a raincheck.

Oh no! I'm disappointed for you! My little art history buff heart is crying. There may never be another Cristo/Jean Claude exhibition again!
Actually, that's not true, they've been working on another project similtaniously, but they are getting oldish...
I really like the way I've taken to purposely contradict myself within the last couple posts.
That's not true either. gosh...

Well I'll be there the weekend after the 28th, probably. I'm hoping against hope it stays up that long.
I was really, really looking forward to a nice lunch by the gates. C'est la vie.

I think the last day is the 27th, unfortunately.
I have been up to the park a few times this week, everytime in the late afternoon, and I must say I'm a bit disappointed. The overall effect is kind of nice, but the gates as individual objects are so ugly, and I really just hate the color. I have heard that dawn is the time to see them, so I'm gonna hit it in the morning just to make sure.
This one might be open past the 27th:

Yeah, yesterday I looked it up. Turns out on the website it says that it'll be staying up just as long as I'll be on the west coast.
Shame.
Hey, Somerville. I go there all the time, but I haven't seen those gates. I wonder why.
Edit: Ok, so maybe I am going to NYC today.
I love spontaniety.
Edit #2: So I'm in Brooklyn. I'm leaving at 4:00. I never saw the gates.
