Oh yeah, this cassette too, for 50 cents:

It's Buffalo Tom's Let Me Come Over. It's the first album of theirs I've owned.

That Pipettes album is fun.

Yeah, it might actually be the highlight of this haul.

I'm into some of their stuff, but I don't have that one. It's "Spine Of God" that I always rep. That said, it's probably at least decent.

Spine of God has been in my best albums of all time list since its release, and Tab and the tune Freakshop USA (well everything recorded up to Spine let's say) is great.  Everything else was weaksauce for me and that was from an at the time raging fan.  Medicine and Snake Dance are two all-time great rock and roll songs unrepentantly dripping with sleaze.

I believe the thing was MM was essentially Wyndorf (the singer) and John McBain writing songs, and after Spine McBain left to form Hater.  Both players on their own were much less than the sum of MM's parts for me.

That album made me trip out when the video was playing on mute in a bar and contained like 10000 rockettes in gold lame dancing with Wyndorf in the middle.  It's the logical extension of Monster Magnet for sure, but you'll have to judge whether it's good stuff or not.

Rikk Agnew - All by Myself

I often think that if Rikk Agnew had fashioned a cool band name for himself instead of just being "Rikk Agnew" he'd be better remembered today--dude's solo work is on par with his contributions to the Adolescents and Christian Death, IMO, but nowhere near as high-profile.

That's actually the first solo record of his I've heard, though I obviously love The Adolescents/Christian Death/Social Distortion.

That being said, All By Myself is my favorite of any of his work I've heard thus far.  Really, really, really good shit, and I wish it were as well-known and accolade-receiving as Only Theatre of Pain and all that jazz.  People fuckin' need to know this record.

And, he was only 17-years-old when it was made!!

Just picked up the Tarcutta self-titled debut.  Mostly instrumental Melbourne trio named after a town in New South Wales - go figure.  Hammond, guitar, drums with one track with a guest vocal by a singer named Jess Cornelius.  Really looking forward to listening to it.  There's a track online at the Hidden Shoal website if you want to have a listen yourself.

Also got The Replacements 'Don't You Know Who I Thought I Was?'  Art Brut's fault.

Hate to burst your bubble, but that's not true. Wikipedia lists his birthday as 12/9/58, making him 25 when "All By Myself" was released. I mean, I guess he could have recorded it in 1975 and let it sit around for 8 years, but I doubt it.

I'll go ahead and call that a score of epic proportions. "Let Me Come Over" is in my all time top 10 for sure.

the important point, though, is that it's a great, overlooked album. if there were justice in the world, "o.c. life" would have been on the soundtrack of every rachael leigh cook movie ever made and thus provided rikk with a nice, after-the-fact payoff.

also, davy, "sleepy eyed" is one of the most overlooked albums of the 90s IMO, a nearly flawless summation of everything good about buffalo tom's breed of unassuming "my so-called life"-courting brand of alt-rockage, and I suspect easily found in used bargain bins everywhere.

That shit is the soundtrack to the first half of the 90s for me. "Darl" is probably my favorite, which is strange because it's a rare Chris Colbourn lead vocal, and most of the time I like Janovitz's singing better, but I love several of his songs on there ("Mountains Of Your Head," "Larry," "Porchlight," "Saving Grace") almost as much. Fuck, it's easier to mention the songs on that album I don't totally love: "I'm Not There," "Frozen Lake," ...uh, yeah, that's about it. God, you know what's a bummer? I just checked Amazon for song titles, and apparently this album is out of print, since they only have it available through third party sellers. FUCK THAT.

Xpost Whit... I agree with him, davy, "Sleepy Eyed" is just about as good as "Let Me Come Over," and yeah, easy to find for cheap, so you should get it too. Also "Birdbrain" and "Big Red Letter Day," the latter of which has the song that was used on My So-Called Life and was supposed to make them famous (instead, it made an entire generation of kids a year or two younger than myself react to my mentions of Buffalo Tom by saying "They're a real band? I thought they were made up for My So-Called Life!" Sigh). Those two are a hair less good than "Let Me Come Over" and "Sleepy Eyed" but still good enough to be well worth your money.

Hmm, that is strange and slightly bubble-bursting.  I could have sworn I read dude was 17, but I guess I'm just the biggest idiot ever.  Ah well, I still love the record just as much, obviously.

Absolutely second the Sleepy Eyed recommendation. "Your Stripes" is sublime.

I just checked, thinking that Tony Cadena was really young when the Adolescents started, and you could have been confusing the two of them. Sure enough, when the first Adolescents album was recorded, Tony was 17.

HA!  I knew my idiocy wasn't entirely unfounded!

But, yeah, I agree with auto-da-fey about it not mattering and All By Myself being fuckin' classic despite age and all.  Love it.

I too rather like that Pipettes album. 2007 gets my vote for the best musical year of this decade.

I went to the used music store yesterday, since it was nice out and I wanted a new excuse to go out. I came home with the first music things I've bought in five or six years other than an album or two and random singles off of iTunes.

wound up with 2 cds - SDRE's pink album, of which I only ever had a stray mp3 or two back in high school, and Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque. I am pleased. I think I might make a habit of visiting this shop on weekends in an attempt to acquaint myself with widely-referenced bands for whom I only have a tangential appreciation, or bands I've forgotten altogether. As good a return on a sawbuck or two as one can expect.

Those are two of my favorite albums ever, especially the Sunny Day Real Estate one, which is in my all time top 10 for sure. You did good.

Teenage Fanclub rules, for the record.

If you jam on Bandwagonesque, I can heartily recommend all of their Geffen discog plus A Catholic Education, with special praise for Songs From Northern Britain as certainly in my top ten power pop records of all time and probably in my all time top something of pop records in general.
