"epic fail"
«
on:
May 29, 2009, 10:03:09 PM »
I heard a guy actually saying this out loud at the movies tonight, several times, when people on screen would, like, get attacked by shit and stuff - you could tell he was sure it made him sound v. v. cool
do people not know this is a v. old meme or is this one of those that's going to count as something new because a bunch of people just discovered it & if the answer is "the latter" can someone please kill me, thx

Here's some more grist for the mill:
It's been on the notice board in the graduate's lab for quite some time now, next to that asinine Obama 'progress' poster.

I actually find a lot of these memes perversely funny because despite the ridiculous amounts of time I spend online I completely missed about 90% of them up until the past eight months or so. I didn't even know what 4chan was until this year.
That said, there's no excuse for speaking them aloud in a movie theater
Also were you seeing T4

...and?
me : horror movies :: danzig : doritos & this was a sam raimi movie so remember that even a shitty one I'm gonna love, but I was all about it & would recommend. lots of stupid shit especially toward the end but some classic evil dead 2/army of darkness-style frenzied horror of the type that tim burton used to take copious notes on, great camera work and sets, most of the cheese done with the exact right mixture of sincerity & stage-wink. like the medium/psychic who helps out - so utterly cheesy but great all the same. raimi not exactly, y'know, challenging himself, but he's in great form. BUT be advised both at my theater & at a friend's up in Philadelphia the volume was WAY too loud. I listen to death metal all the fucking time & play in a rock band with one of the hardest-hitting drummers around, so if I say a movie was too loud, I don't mean I'm old and cranky, I mean the shit was ridiculously interfere-with-your-enjoyment loud.

And, how old is 'epic fail?' A contributor to my school newspaper uses it frequently as an interjection. If he works hard he might end up writing for the NY Post.

The wider world has known about it for like a year. I think it's been making the rounds of geekdom for at least 10 years. Put it this way, I first started using the internet a lot in about 1998, and it was here when I got here.

What the fuck is up with theaters doing this shit lately. A friend of mine saw
Be Kind Rewind
under those straits and left twenty minutes in (for sound reasons, not movie quality), presumably to kill the sound people and/or Jack Black.

Seriously. It was like that when I saw
Star Trek
. And it wasn't even loud, but clear, either. Shit was distorted as hell. That plus $10 popcorn and 45 minutes of commercials pretty much put the last nail in the coffin as far as me attending corporate theaters goes.

I was at dinner with Mindy last weekend for our anniversary and the young guy at the next table got up and said to his date, "bee are bee"
translation something like "hey look i am a cool internet person and I aspire to the type of social retardedness that computer science majors have been coming by naturally for decades"

Also two of my immediate groups of friends bandy about the phrase "epic fail" in intolerably high quantities. It is one of those memes that began its life full of stupidity and has since only colonized more.

It is shorthand for "You could easily do better than to speak with me"
