Man, so I just went on this long, lovely late-night stroll, walking through deserted Philly streets, listening to music, and just reflectin' on shit.
Then some fucking cop threw me out of LOVE Park. Kind of a buzzkill, that. Congrats, pig, you protected empty city space from my reveries.

I keep packing and packing and there's still an entire houseful of crap to be packed. Is it breeding when I turn my back?
This is one of the worst parts about moving. There's always a stage--from a third to two thirds of the way into packing--where it seems like you still have the same amount of stuff left to be packed as you ever did, but you now also have stacks and stacks of boxes that are pretty much filling every spare inch of space.
Course, almost as bad is the stage after you've packed pretty much everything and you start moving the furniture, when all of the rooms in your house just look like big piles of trash.

I have fond memories of drinking tallboys in Love Park and getting all nervous when a cop walked by.
I think it was Love Park, anyway.

I repeatedly heard on the radio yesterday that the heat index was 115 degrees... I don't want to go outside today.

Reason To Burn Down My House #867/Reasons To Microwave The Cats #76:
Preface:
My parents know absolutely ZERO about cats. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Even though they once owned one and my mom has adopted my cat for about the past ten years, they persist in the idea that cats are actually just small dogs. (Need to be fed twice a day at regular times, can be trained, etc.)
The story:
Since I live in a microscopic apartment with an open floorplan, I have no door on my sleeping area. This means that I have no way of keeping cat playtime away from my bed as I sleep. I've gotten used to the noise at night, I can even sleep through knocking over my guitar for the 900th time. I haven't managed to be able to sleep through cat playtime on my bed, however. Sometime around 6 this morning, I woke up and against my better instincts, threw the cat into the bathroom and shut the door, as my parents have recently been advising me. "What possible trouble could he get into in 3 hours?" I thought. "Ha HA!" the cat thought.
Somehow in those 3 hours, the cat managed to dig in and open one of the drawers immediately in front of the bathroom door, effectively barring the door from the inside and locking himself into the most important room of the house. It took me an hour and many ruined tools (including a very expensive Alumacutter) and implements to close the door from the inside and let him out.
Finally, I managed to get the fucking door open only to see the cat sitting on a copy of Wired as if to say "You lock me in here and
this
is all you leave me to read??" Much can be learned from cats about being nonchalant.

Yes! This exactly what's happening. And for an extra annoyance, the admin at the city college where I wanted to take a photo lab course is so hopeless that now I am not going to be able to take the course at all, so I will be out of school until a year from Fall at the earliest.
BOO TO THAT.
I guess it's time to go to the photo thread and ask about darkrooms.

My room mate is very upset about what's happening with the Gosselins. Apparently they gave him hope, and now that hope has been destroyed.

Holeee Shit.
Okay, so we're trying to move. Around May, we decided that we'd like to move into a larger apartment, so we started looking around. We started with our own complex, who offered to let us move into a place the next size up for basically what we're paying now. It was a pretty good deal, which we eventually agreed to and we went over and signed a renewal lease on the new place that started on July 1st. At the time we were told that we'd be able to pick up a key on June 15th and start moving in between then and the end of the month. Great!
So the 15th rolls around and we swing by the office to pick up the key. The place isn't ready, which was disappointing, but not surprising. The lock needed to be changed, it needed to be repainted, they were going to put in new carpet and new appliances. We'd made plans to move in on the 20th, so we were kind of anxious about all this happening in less than a week, but they said they'd get that done for us.
The complex manager didn't seem to recall the verbal agreement about the 15th and seemed irritated when we brought it up. She always comes across as very stressed out and in the middle of putting out fifteen fires at once. That having been said, I'm not surprised that she didn't recall the agreement, she wasn't in that meeting. The woman in the office who sat down with us when we signed the lease has since moved on or been fired or something. So the one person who could vouch for that is gone.
Okay, fine, whatever, they said they'd try to get us in by our proposed move date. I transferred power and gas to the new address. We were able to pick up the key that Wednesday and there were painters there putting a new coat on the walls. Things seemed to be working out.
Then Friday evening, we go over to check on the progress and the new carpet hasn't been laid and the new appliances haven't been installed. We called the office to see if everything was alright and apparently, the manager had gone home sick that day and the carpet didn't get done. Well, fuck, that blew our move-in day. On the phone, tMO asked what were we supposed to do? "You could not move" was the reply. Yeah, thanks.
So we stay on top of them about getting this stuff that they had said they were going to do done and moved our move-in day to this Saturday. They'd told us that okay, they were going to get the carpet replaced Monday and the new appliances shortly after that. It's Thursday and none of that stuff's been done and when we asked after that yesterday, the shit really hit the fan. The manager told tMO that we were being ungrateful and that they were doing this stuff as a courtesy to us and if we wanted out, then we were free to leave. After that insulting conversation, we went looking for a new place.
We found one just down the street at a nicer complex for a comparable amount and started the application process. We wrote up a notice to take to the office saying that as per their verbal option to terminate our renewal, we were vacating the premises. Again, the manager was out sick and the woman working wouldn't take the letter from us since she didn't really know anything about our situation.
Then tMO gets a call from the manager this afternoon saying that she'd heard we were trying to terminate the renewal and that it was too late at this point--we'd owe a lot of money and would be taken to court. Furthermore, we were no longer welcome to move into the property, that she would evict us.
Again: holy shit. This isn't happening. tMO's nearly hysterical. But she calls the parent company of our property and speaks to the VP, gives him her side of the story. He seems willing to listen and to be helpful. So at the end of the call, he tells tMO that he'll have to call our manager and get her side of the story and that he'll call back.
Throughout all of this, we've been packing. And our one bedroom apartment has become a thoroughly unpleasant place to be--filled with boxes and cramped.
We're getting the hell out of there on Saturday, but I have no idea where to. I don't know where this is going and it's scaring me a lot.

That manager deserves to lose her job for this. Keep records and sue the shit out of her and the company you've been renting from, is my advice.

Yeah, try to get the times and dates of all interactions straight so you've got your shit together better than they do. Plus, you've already got the key, so that right there is proof that you were supposed to move in at a certain date and they fucked it up.
If it did make it to court, I can't see you losing the case. Hell, offer to take THEM to court. That's what we did with our terrible landlord in Colorado, and even though we were moving to Georgia a couple months before we'd even be able to get a court date, we bluffed and she fell for it.

Yeah, that sucks. I hope that the rest of your move goes as smoothly as possible. It's the sucks when the people who manage your property only operate in the indifferent-to-your-needs or vindictive modes.

I certainly don't see how she could evict you AND bang you for the renewal money because you were uppity about moving in to the place they said would be ready more than a week ago.
