Nobody ever played that game, they just set up the mousetrap and then set it off.

Man, my friends and I play poker every week, but this thread has me thinking we need to broaden our horizons. Particularly interested in strategy games with a bluffing aspect, since that clearly appeals to that crowd.

In other news: I'll be at

That sounds like a more complex version of a drinking game I used to play with friends. I approve!
Have fun at the Game Fair! Sounds wicked awesome indeed.

Haha, nice! I used to go to Origins when I was a wee lad. Are you in Cbus, ww?*
Scratch that, I just realized you're traveling for work. You should hit up Betty's in the Short North and Oldfield's on High while you're there! If you do the latter, the music nerd what owns the place'd probably give you a free round if you told him we was internet palz.

Thanks, pollo! I'm heading to Ohio tomorrow to hang out/prepare for a few days before things get going, so I'll definitely check those places out. Sounds great!

Betty's is wonderful. Show up early to snag a table and order the pork cutlet. Great selection of beers on tap, as well. And if you want an even better draft selection, brave the yuppie crush at Bodega down the street.

It looks it! I am excited for this. And hell, I'm there for 6 nights, so we'll probably drop by Bodega to see what's what and explore their beers. Great help, dude.

I bought scrabble for my phone and have been playing it during down times at work.
I scored a 414 the other day.

Yeah, scattergories! They get pretty silly pretty quick when you play them in 5th form and come up with sports like cat swinging (if Mannie was here this post would be validated).
We never owned ones like Cluedo or Mousetrap or ones that are silly but fun. This are Serious boardgame household, so we mostly just played Boggle and Scrabble and chess and Mah Jong and, well, Monopoly. I haven't played the latter in a long time, come to think of it. My friend always had a wide variety boardgames, was real into them, but somehow we never played them when I was over there.

I always liked board games fine, but when I was a kid, I had this one friend whose mother would encourage me to go over and play Monopoly with him, since the family couldn't keep up with him. He even had some more intricate Monopoly-like games.

Playing scattergories with you used to devolve into the stupidest fights ever! Arguments over whether if, for "Bodies of water starting with G" you were allowed "Golly! Its a flood!" Infuriating!

Hey, what's not great about "something slimy starting with R" being Russell Crowe? To be fair, that was Mama's one.

Would anybody here be interested in a play-by-email game of Diplomacy?
For the uninitiated:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game
)
The rules are _extremely_ simple. Most of the game is spent talking to other players, forming and betraying alliances, alternately supporting and backstabbing your "friends." We could run a pretty leisurely-paced game: I was thinking maybe one or two moves per week.
Ideally, we'd need seven people.

I might be! I've never played before, but I'm always interested in learning new games.

It's easy, man! Though like most board games, reading the rules doesn't amount to much without visual examples of gameplay. I'll try to scrounge up a pdf file of the newer Avalon Hill edition's rulebook

The rulebook, a mapsheet (which will make the rules make infinitely more sense, and you'll need one anyway), and a "quick teaching guide" are all on this page. Or I could explain it here in a few paragraphs.

I should probably clarify: the Wikipedia page is only slightly confusing, but I had some friends who were playing it a couple of years back, and one of them tried to explain it to me and it was all just so damn
complicated
.
It does sound really intriguing, though.
