It's a good place to go when it's 4AM and you suddenly realize you need an avocado, a bookshelf and a tire.

Your part of the country smells funny and has a stupid face
Our superior barbecue makes up for it.

"Shorty" started out as an affectionate nickname for your kid, and I love the logic: "I call my girl 'baby' and I call my baby 'Shorty' so it's about time I started calling my girl 'Shorty.'"
Transitive property of slang for the win.
"Shorty" is really my favorite affectionate diminutive. It's cute.
'ey shawty, what it do?
...
I'm just tryna holla at ya.

Though I admit to being easily trolled when it comes to food and/or booze, that one was too obvious

Was there sweet tea on hand? That's kind of a deal breaker for me.
I'm just bustin yr chops man, that all sounds awesome tasty. What I'm sayin though, is can you drive to a restaurant or shack or whatever nearby and get bbq that good? In my experience up north, the answer is always no.
I wanna get a smoker myself too.

It's Chicago, dude. Once all the people who invented southern bbq got sick of being lynched and whatnot, where do you think they moved?

Maaik's kinda onto something, though. My ongoing struggles to find a decent meal in NYC support this -- this weekend's trip was no exception, finding me and my friend wandering from dining establishment to dining establishment in vain search of food transcending the mediocre. First night: terrible Thai food on 2nd Ave..,the shrimp were leathery, tough. Rice clumpy. No balance tended to in the curry...overwhelming taste of coconut milk, no kick, no spice. Second day: bad greasy diner breakfast that sent me running back to our hostel to take a massive shit. Fatigued, settled for Chipotle at Union Square for lunch, which sadly turned out to be the best meal. The Chipotle. Was. The. Best. Meal. WTF. Chipotle is terrible. Unremarkable NY style pizza later on near Washington Square, not bad but not transcending the two decent NY-style places within a few blocks' walk of my apartment down here. Next morning, on recommendation, tried the "amazing" brunch menu at Table 12 on Ave. A. Paid 7.90 for two small glasses of orange juice while washing down their signature breakfast dish, the "Sunrise Sandwich" ... possibly the most flavor-devoid breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Boring as fuck. At least it only cost $5.
Meanwhile I can walk into any mom-and-pop place here and expect a decent, if not very good, meal. Pay less for it, too. I don't even have to scour Yelp reviews or subscribe to food blogs, either.

Hey guys, I didn't like 3 meals I had at 3 random restaurants out of the 100000000000000 in NYC, therefore my shitty NC college town has better food.
There's this awesome burrito place everybody goes to after the bars close sooo good

Man, I've had a lot more meals than that in NYC, and I've never had the gastrointestinal orgasms that NY's reputation as foodie paradise would seem to suggest

Hahaha that's because you didn't eat at any real restaurants, dude. Cheap Thai, shitty diner, overpriced brunch. Excellent survey.

This is an extremely good point. I always think of Chicago as somewhat southern in personality.

A huge influx of southern blacks moved here from about 1890-the end of WWI. Hence southside bbq, Chicago blues, etc

It's also true though that there's a lot of bad BBQ in Chicago edit: southside places are pretty good, there are a lot of bad smokeless "meat jello" type places though
There's also some very good BBQ in Chicago, and not all of it takes place in my driveway

What is 'BBQ' to a Chicagolander? Ribs? Pulled pork? Chopped?

Typical south side Chicago BBQ is ribs, rib tips and hot links, but we have the other stuff too.

Sounds more midwesternish but I can certainly get down with a plate of ribs.
