Atlanta bbq is kind of a hodgepodge, but most places seem to specialize in ribs.  I haven't really had much decent pulled pork inside the perimeter, but there's a place near Little 5s that does some awesome brisket.

My brother's got a list of places he wants to try--we're taking a BBQ tour all through this summer.

And fuck you!  Waffle House is great.

Well, maybe I was being a little harsh...I just think Waffle House is a wee expensive for the diner fare it offers. There are cheaper, better local alternatives. Can't fuck with their hashbrowns though.

Also there is a silly but accurate Southern meme built around the idea of "good Waffle Houses" and "bad Waffle Houses"...because of their ubiquity, chances are you live within a couple of miles of both. The bad ones have burly, smelly cooks who look like they have hepatitis and tend to forget to put the eggs back into the reach-in after they plop a couple onto a grill that hasn't been washed since the 1970s. You don't go to the bad Waffle Houses.

When I was living in Indiana, I stumbled across a food column on hot dogs and my mind broke. I was unaware that there were 'versions' of the hot dog, let alone one to each city. It had recipes for Chicago dogs, Cincinnati dogs, Indy, etc. I was like, 'oh maybe they use dijon mustard along the upper Mississippi owing to early french influence whereas Cincinnati uniquely prefers ketchup and sauer kraut - no mustard here, please - to top their franks.' I have such a silly and narrow northeastern mind.

Things I have discovered since moving to GA that I could now not live without:
1. Sweet tea
2. Honey mustard
3. Pimento cheese
4. Salt and vinegar potato chips
5. Indian food

These are things that were entirely absent from the areas of the Midwest that I grew up in, the last one mainly because there was no one who had probably even heard of Indian food, whereas down here, there's a whole section of the population who know and love it.  Most of the best vegetarian meals I have had have been Indian food.

Things that blew my mind upon moving to the South:
1. BBQ is not synonymous with grilling.
2. BBQ sandwich is not synonymous with sloppy joes.
3. There is something called Brunswick stew, and I am not sure what it is, but people are fanatical about it.

Edit to be real and admit that I put sugar in my grits.  I guess I'll never be a true southern girl.

I think it's funny that McDonald's is pushing the sweet tea these days. Having no frame of reference for the authentic or the McDonald's version, I wonder about the differences.

Co-sign w/ Aglaya on everything, but especially w/r/t the sweet tea and pimento cheese.

Also putting sugar in your grits is pretty normal where I'm from. Sugar and lots of butter.

Nog & Pollo, I'm guessing 'Northern barbecue' consists of cold cuts and fish parts, but next time I'm up there I'd happily let you dudes direct me toward a quality meal

They're pushing it in Detroit? Wow.

In my experience, the relative quality of McDonald's sweet tea is pretty variable...particularly w/r/t the amount of sugar. The preferable fast food sweet teas in the South belong to Bojangle's and Popeye's and places like that.

But hopefully they're pushing honest-to-god sweet tea up north and not the shitty foodservice version you start to find as you toe closer toward the Mason-Dixon

Yeah, they went nationwide with sweet tea a year or two back (in the same push where they introduced that "Southern-style" chicken thingie).  They push it here, too.
