Things I have discovered since moving to GA that I could now not live without:
1. Sweet tea
2. Honey mustard
3. Pimento cheese
4. Salt and vinegar potato chips
5. Indian food

Things that are actually Southern:
1. Sweet tea

Don, I really would really love to hear your alternate origin theory for Pimento cheese

Also I don't take too kindly to the idea of McDonald's taking it upon themselves to carpet-bomb the rest of the country with their interpretation of southern cuisine.

Hmm, so it is.  It was such a staple at various New England gatherings from my childhood that I figured it had to be national.

x-post Thermo it came from a Chipotle in Midtown

PS Thermo don't be mad that you couldn't find good food in NYC, it just means you don't know what you're talking about

Southerners were the first ones who figured out how to combine the exotic spices of SALT and VINEGAR.

All the iced tea up here is sweet, but I won't dispute it's southernness. Since, like, that's where it's from.

Apparently pimento cheese is a southern thing, but I can definitely vouch for the nationwide proliferation of various cheese/mayo goos.

Thermo, I'm not sure why I'm addressing whatever you think of as "good," because for all I know it's Chipotle (wait, that is all I know!), but:  there are about 91309508290358 restaurants in New York catering to all types of clientele and budget.  Many of them are just random places that take dollars from dumb tourists!  And it looks like you found those.

I've never read yelp or food blogs to find good restaurants.  I've either scoped them myself (you learn to do this when your options reach beyond Waffle House and Chik-Fil-A) or learned about them from friends (which you could easily have done here, though I guess that's a missed opportunity for strutting about).

He shouldn't have to do all that work though!  He's used to Winston-Salem, where apparently every single restaurant is good.

Heh, well, as I said in the OP, Chipotle is terrible. That it was the best meal I had in NYC this weekend speaks, however, to my ongoing struggle to find really good meals in the city. Which isn't to say I haven't had really good food in NYC, but rather to underscore that I've had an impressive streak of bad luck when it comes to randomly deciding where to dine. My preferred way to experience NYC has always been the "wander around on foot and impulsively find shit to get into" approach and it's generally worked so well...except when it comes to food.

And unfortunately where I live doesn't fit well into your vision of some kind of fast food hell--"good" food to me, for instance, is walking two and a half blocks from my apartment to the row of seafood restaurants lining the riverside and eating fresh NC shrimp (now approaching high season) or local oysters or just buying direct from the vendor at the docks and bringing it home and cleaning and preparing it myself. Or driving out into the country to my fave Eastern NC-style pulled pork shack. Or getting some dirt-cheap diner food at a local greasy spoon. Or just saying 'fuck it' and cooking at home.

x-post blucas I haven't lived in W-S since 2005, man, what the deuce?

Nog & Pollo, I'm guessing 'Northern barbecue' consists of cold cuts and fish parts, but next time I'm up there I'd happily let you dudes direct me toward a quality meal

Most of it's just inch-thick chunks of sheep marrow, sitting in cream and sprinkled with birch bark.

No, actually, I was thinking Fette Sau, which is right around the neighborhood, has seriously good meats, and has like thirty to forty different kinds of whisky.  Also beer.

Thermo your wandering approach is right on but you need to hone your skills, I guess.  Or just ask LPTJ where to eat using your phone.

Dude that wasn't directed at you so much as at this entire thread, truly

Like I'm not even sure why you'd think it was directed at you... ?

ALSO: I'm gonna start hating all the food here? I think that may be false!

I've said this here before:  I've never eaten Chik-Fil-A and I have a near-constant "that's so" craving
