I don't listen to TMBG but once in a great while anymore (mainly in the lead-up to seeing them live), but I wouldn't say it's that I've grown out of them. And I don't think their aesthetic is childish or juvenile; their first record, the self-titled one, is a straight-up avant garde record. It had to absolutely bewilder people when it first hit the shelves in '86. It remains their strangest album, by a considerable margin. So I've always viewed that record (and the run of records through Flood and Apollo 18) through the lens of an avant garde aesthetic steeped in humor and cultural reference; the same lens through which I'd view something like, say, Frank Zappa's We're Only in it for the Money.

So I think they legimately have avant garde roots (some of the interviews in Gigantic seemed to confirm this), and I also believe that when people label their music childish or juvenile or whatever, it's because they're misinterpreting that avant garde aesthetic as just trying to be "wacky." Plus, some of their best songs (e.g. "They'll Need a Crane") are really, really fucking sad, and quite adult in subject matter

Of course, they've long since ceased to be an avant garde band, but the trace elements are still there. And even now that they're doing actual records for children, the "kiddie songs" are still charmingly off-kilter and left-field.

I'm 'bout to go to see Harvey Milk and Torche.  I should probably leave now, actually.  Goodbye, internet.

I fully endorse Jim's QFTing of Thermo's post.

In other news, I wish I could make it out to the Harvey Milk show, but god damn it, I am under the fucking gun with all this fucking paper-writing.

Went to buy tickets for five shows but only came out with tickets for two, wah.
I will see Dino Jr and the Dodos this fall, anyway.

I will try to see The Dodos again this year. I bought a ticket last time around, but forgot about the show until it had already started. I saw the last 20 minutes of the show, so I can tell you that their concerts end well, I guess.

So, I've never heard any Bloody Panda, but I hear good things and they're doing a show in Nashville this Thursday that I'm probably gonna go to.

My question, I guess, is mainly for those of you who've seen them live: should I let my first exposure to their tunes be their live show?  'Cause I hear it's pretty wicked.  But, at the same time, I like to be familiar with at least a couple of songs before I go see a show.

I'm just wondering if you know what you're getting into. I mean, put it this way--if they play 3 songs, that'll be a 40 minute set. Were you aware of that?

I wasn't completely aware of that, but being familiar enough with doom metal in general makes me unsurprised to learn such information.

Edit: still wanna see 'em, 'ough.

Do Bloody Panda have 'tunes'? I somehow wasn't picturing them that way.

charming lil ditties

I still regret not staying for their set last year. It was one of those house show starting three hours late things. But I'm sure it would have been great to see some hooded goth doom in random steamy wood-paneled basement.

narls, for the record since I was talking shit about seeing polvo even if I did say I was making it up, some guy on a bike board had this to say:

Quote
polvo slayed except one of their new songs i expected zach de la roacha to come out and bust sweet rapz. they played a ton of classics much like when i saw their first reunion and nothing will top when i saw them back in 2000 or '99 at the tla and they ruled.  also loved all the new jacks who got into them like last month and didnt know what to do when they played every holy shroud or vibracobra and the crowd got nuts

I've been pretty sad about moving to a place with a much lower frequency of shows I'm interested in, but I found out that Andrew Bird is playing in Cincinnati (an hour away) and the Decemberists are actually coming right to my university, both in October. Wonder if I can get any sort of student discount for the latter. Either way, score, especially since Boston is on neither tour.

Another plus side, I'll no longer have to kick myself about missing whatever awesome show narlus shot/reviewed. Smile

By the way, apparently Live Nation is having a 24 hour sale, starting now, with select shows (including said Andrew Bird show) having no fees. I got clued in by the Andrew Bird fb page, but a lot of other stuff seems to be listed too, so perhaps worth checking out if you've got things you're planning on attending.

both.

when we're done, we get escorted out of the venue unless we've got a ticket.  which i don't.

it's pretty standard routine for concert shooters (esp for seated venues), which is why i typically also try to review the show as well, which can get a ticket tossed my way.

So it's hilarious that I'm selling my ds lite to go to ATP next month, but Jesus Lizard is a must. Well, Boris is too but can't swing for that without giving something else up--like the Gamecube. I've been working on Prince or Persia for some six years now though and I'll be damned to give up at 70%.

Also, is anyone seeing Leonard Cohen on this tour? I haven't been this pumped for a pre-sale since Radiohead 2000.

Best be quick on that one. Somebody here - jeb, maybe? - was shut out of a show that sold out, like, immediately on ticket release or some shit.

Totally worth it, though. Great show.
