Haha, yeah. Got your point, but those were apparently quite enough for two friends of mine who did see Lightning Bolt.

I have seen Lightning Bolt.  They put on an excellent show, but yes, they are extremely loud.

What's the loudest band you guys have ever seen? I think MBV, Dinosaur JR and Loop tie for me.

Definitely My Bloody Valentine.  No regrets there.

Maybe, but who cares?

Oddly enough I think the loudest concert I ever saw was Frank Black, but that was due more to the tiny, low-ceilinged room than anything else.  The venue has a reputation for blowing ears out.

Loudest band I ever saw might have been Buzzoven, and I have seen My Bloody Valentine. Buzzoven were so loud I couldn't hear anything but distorted noise unless I put in earplugs, and I didn't have any so I had to spend the whole set with either my fingers in my ears or, later, with balls of toilet paper stuffed into my ears.

Cortina were always a million miles of fun to see, but they had this thing that they'd do if the mix was wrong- "Hey, the bass is too low, turn it up!" play another song. "hey sound guy, now my mic's too quiet, turn it up!" and over the course of the gig they would just get louder and louder and louder, evening out the mix. And they started off pretty loud too!

How was I completely oblivious to the fact that the Melvins'll be here week after next?!

Still on the fence for Sunday's Fiery Furnaces show...don't really have the funds to blow.  Anybody else seen 'em this go-round?  Worth it?

Fiery Furnaces aren't headed up here in this stretch, but I've seen them several times, and they've always been between very good and excellent. Except the one time when Eleanor had a cold. They kinda sucked that time.

I saw the Furnaces the other night.  It was merely okay, and even that was simply because I like their music.  Like, they didn't put on a very great show, but I enjoyed hearing the tunes.  Just go listen to the new record, it's a lot cheaper/easier and more worth your time.

RE: loudest bands you've seen--these guys were definitely in my top 5, and if they'd played in the smaller club where I saw Buzzoven, they might have been at the top of the list. As it was, I could kind of get to the side of the speakers when I saw the Melvins, which really helped.

God, the Melvins kicked so much ass when I saw 'em.  And it was in a tiny ass club and it was super loud and I was within punchin distance of Coady Willis

Oh, yeah, for the record, I saw the "Stoner Witch" lineup, a month or so before that album came out. They were opening for L7.

I just bought two tickets to paradise, which is to say I am going to go see Faust and Sunn O))) next month.  Fuckin' Faust!  I never quite expected that would even be a possibility, but it's too cool that I'mma be there.

Sugar was so loud that my ears were ringing the next day even though I did have those fancy-pants earplugs in...

says the guy with well-documented hearing problems!

 Cool

i'm currently rocking the fancy pants earplugs i picked up for free at the MBV show last year, because i lost my real fancy pants ones. but i haven't been to a concert, much less a noisy one, in quite some time, so they've not seen much use.

I wanna be clear here:  "Fancy-pants" to me does mean foam.  In my brain, "regular" earplugs are the aforementioned wads of toilet paper crammed in my ear-holes.

ah well, davy will be happy at least..

(my real fancy pants ones weren't actually much more fancy than the ones i got free from MBV - well, provided you count "if you spend £75 on concert tickets for you and your girlfriend then they will hand out these earplugs so long as you get there before they run out" as free - but i do miss them because they came in a little plastic thing that helped me avoid losing them. which i realise in retrospect wasn't all that helpful because i did in fact lose them, but still. you can't buy that kind of feeling of security).

Dungen and Woods are playing tonight at the Rhtyhm Room, which is one of the best venues in Phoenix and the closest one that gets shows on the regular.

Has anyone seen Woods and/or Dungen recently?  I have seen Dungen before but that was also 3 or so years ago when Ta Det Lungt was their newest and I've liked the two more recent albums less.  Hmm.

Well, I used to use them but now I'm older, my hearing is worse, and I can't afford to dilly-dally. Gotta block out everything I can.

Also, my fancy-pants earplugs were...let's see...roughly 200 times more expensive than foam?
