also does anyone know The Postelles? Because this is absolutely not motivating me to catch their opening set:

The Postelles…serve up a hooked-at-the-gills, head-bobbing rock'n'roll groove. They take doo-wop to indie rock the way Vampire Weekend took Graceland to Cake Shop. It’s fun swagger, controlled recklessness. New York, NY

then again, here's what the concert site says about Meadowlands:

Quote
On the surface it's an unassuming indie pop amalgam of all things Pavement, R.E.M., Neutral Milk Hotel, and Guided By Voices. Especially Guided By Voices. Like the last 15 years of college/indie rock boiled down into it's essence and then squeezed into perfectly subtle pop songs.

And as always, it's THE SONGS, beautifully melancholic epics that are at once personal and introspective, but also grand and sweeping. Epic and wordly but also totally insular. Irresistable indie pop jangle camouflages amazing sonic complexities and dark rich textures, strange chords and shifting minor key melodies. The most obvious sonic precedent seems to be Guided By Voices, but an alternate GBV, raised on Pavement and the Pixies instead of the Kinks and the Beatles, and with a big ol' dose of Ritalin, keeping them from yanking away the sort of hooks most bands spend a lifetime dreaming about writing after only thirty seconds, instead allowing us to sink in and luxuriate in the droning, ringing choruses that repeat and repeat, lulling us into a sweetly narcotized melancholy pop coma. Highly Recommended!

Huh. I've never even thought of GBV here. Whatever.

Wrens tickets purchased, show tomorrow. Despite much listening, these guys have yet to truly grab me beyond "She Sends Kisses," so I am giving myself over to the seemingly unanimous LPTJ belief in the greatness of their live show. That, and M suggested it (though I don't think she much knows them beyond my playing of that song for her).

There's probably not a big risk involved here.

(Though admittedly, my situation was a bit different: they hadn't fully grabbed me before the show either, but that was just after a couple of cursory listenings to The Meadowlands, certainly nothing that would qualify as "much listening".)

Yeah, I agree. One of the few bands I've seen live is the Wrens, when I was at Middlebury College, and they were awesome. The power went out three times in the middle of songs, but they handled it great and just generally seem like awesome guys.

Re: Unbunny, I'm a huge fan of the Typist EP and especially Snow Tires, but I have no idea on their live show. Or maybe I should say his show. It's a one-man act as far as the albums go I think, so I suppose it is on tour too. I've listened to his new album maybe once and thought it was just pretty good, but I really haven't given it a fair shot yet.

Finally got round today to getting my plane tickets to Australia for my rockin weekend.

Excited!

hey my mates in Slug Guts are playing this, you should watch em. sorta swampy Birthday Party type business, loud as balls, shitloads of reverb, pointy shoes etc etc.

this, amazingly, is the only mention of Slug Guts on the site. I recently got a copy of their new LP on Sacred Bones and totally love it. As you are friends w/ them, any chance of them having a spare copy of their 1st LP?
