Dungen and Woods are playing tonight at the Rhtyhm Room, which is one of the best venues in Phoenix and the closest one that gets shows on the regular.

Has anyone seen Woods and/or Dungen recently?  I have seen Dungen before but that was also 3 or so years ago when Ta Det Lungt was their newest and I've liked the two more recent albums less.  Hmm.

Well, I haven't seen them live since around the same time, but judging from this video of them jamming on the "Ta Det Lugnt" intro riff, filmed two weeks ago in Iowa, they've still got the goods. I'd feel like seeing this 7 or so minute excerpt live was worth the price of admission, so I'd definitely still go.

Tickets have now also been purchased for In Flames/3 Inches of Blood (I hope to see my favorite Philadelphia metal show fixture, Mustache Guy) and Face to Face/Pegboy/Polar Bear Club.

Wanted to see Maximo Park but they've just canceled their entire US tour.

Oh damn, that blows.

Pegboy are rad. I didn't know they were still together. "Strong Reaction" was one of my favorite LPs of 1994 [I know it came out in 92, 94 is just when I discovered it].

Lightning.  Bolt.

Will be the first concert I've bought tickets in advance for besides the Gandalfs and Bonnie Prince Billy in some time.

Oh man, I just happened to see a flyer downtown this afternoon promoting a fucking Amon Tobin gig at a new venue here in town. It's tomorrow. I would LOVE to go, but it's $20 and I've actually got a free ticket to go to Six Flags tomorrow night. I'll have to pass, I think, but damn.

I think it's a reunion? I'm not sure. And Naked Raygun is touring, too (but I'm only going to that show if my friend from NY is coming down). Chicago invades!

Interesting. I see from the wikipedia entry that it's the post-John Haggerty Naked Raygun lineup, the one that recorded "Raygun... Naked Raygun," rather than the classic "Throb Throb"/"All Rise" lineup, of which Haggerty was a part. That's cool with me, though, because I thought even "Raygun..." was a good album (though that may be because it was the first one of theirs that I ever heard, back when I was 14 and it was brand new).

Ooh, and speaking of Jeff Pezzati bands, apparently his new band, The Bomb, are also about to release an album--on No Idea Records, no less. I loved their first full-length, and will have to keep an eye out for this one.

TSKS - Kevin Seconds is coming to town Saturday night. Not at all familiar with him or his old band. Should I go?

I don't really know what he'd be doing solo--I assume something more like the Kevin Seconds/5'10" CD than the traditional 7 Seconds stuff. Therefore, I gotta admit I don't know if you should go. I really only know 7 Seconds. I actually have the 5'10" CD and have never played it. Sorry, wish I could be of better help.

Hey, no problem! I looked through the paper, saw 'hardcore legend comes to Albany,' and thought I'd consult you. In any case, it's an occasion to talk about 'the traditional 7 Seconds stuff.' What were they about? Do you recommend?

Imagine Minor Threat with Misfits-style "Whoa-oh" backing vocals on the choruses. They RULED. Get "Walk Together Rock Together" at your earliest convenience. If you like it, "The Crew" is almost as good (though a bit less melodic). "Old School" and "Alt.Music.Hardcore" are both worth your time, though those were collections put together long after the material on them was recorded. "New Wind" and "Ourselves" are also big favorites of mine, but those came at a point where they were moving in a rock direction, and there's much less of an overt hardcore thing on those albums. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the direction 7 Seconds went on those two albums influenced some of the early 90s emo bands.

Truth is, I'm kind of a 7 Seconds apologist and will defend almost any of their albums. The first two I mentioned are the true classics, and probably all you need unless you become some kind of huge fan (i.e. me).

Here, check out a few 7 Seconds songs on youtube:

"Walk Together, Rock Together"
"99 Red Balloons" (from "Walk Together, Rock Together"--the definitive version of this song, far superior to the original)
"Young Til I Die" (from "The Crew"--their ultimate anthem and best-loved song overall, though there are a few I like more)

Oh, also, they were very liberal about socio-political issues and had songs about women's roles in the scene ("Not Just Boys' Fun"), acceptance of homosexuality ("Regress No Way") and the general need to be positive and nice to each other ("How Do You Think You'd Feel?") at a time when all of those ideas were pretty hard to put forward without getting shit. Definitely the best role models of all the traditional 80s hardcore bands.

OK, and I realize I'm gushing now, but one more thing about 7 Seconds that rules:

The chord structures of their songs are deceptively complicated. You think you're hearing just another 3 chord hardcore song, then you try to learn "Walk Together Rock Together" because your band wants to cover it (this happened to me 9 years ago), and it takes you WEEKS to get the verse riff down. What you eventually learn is that, what Kevin Seconds sings as if it's 4 repetitions of a 2-chord riff is actually 3 repetitions of a 3-chord riff, with the third chord on the last repetition held for three times as long. They do shit like that all over their catalog, it's insane. Proof that fast hardcore doesn't have to be written simply or in an untalented fashion.

I just bought two tickets to paradise, which is to say I am going to go see Faust and Sunn O))) next month.  Fuckin' Faust!  I never quite expected that would even be a possibility, but it's too cool that I'mma be there.

I love Can but have never delved further into krautrock. But Faust is playing here in six weeks or so, so I guess now is the perfect opportunity for Discovering Krautrock: Stage Two. I had always thought Neu! was supposed to be stage two and I would hit up Faust later down the line, but I suppose I can improvise and do Faust next instead.

Man, there are a ton of good shows coming up. Also just found out the Avett Brothers are coming up next month.

7Seconds is Reno's real claim to fame, and I always get real excited when any talk of them goes down, so fuck yeah at all those posts above. I haven't heard Kevin Seconds' solo stuff either, but he is a stand-up dude.

Death is playing on the 25th of September. I don't like the idea of going to a show in Detroit alone, but I'll risk life and limb to see these guys play, especially since they're only doing Chicago and Cleveland as well. The gods of rock will protect me.

I was so confused, all thinking "But Chuck Schuldiner's dead!" Then I remembered the band you were talking about.

Yep.  I assume you're talking about this Death while Andrew (and I) initially thought you were talking about this Death.

I'm not as huge into krautrock like I used to be, but Faust is a band I'll always love - the kind of band that makes me hate terms like "krautrock" in general, really.  Buy Faust So Far, though.  You won't regret it, it's an absolutely essential album.  Plus, I think they package the CD version with a copy of their S/T, so that's definitely cool.

And, yeah, Neu! is pretty cool too, for the record, but really, the be-all-end-all kraut record is the Sergius Golowin album whose title escapes me right now.
