I actually fell asleep at the 40 Watt the only time I saw her. All I remember is that she was on her period and was talking about it CONSTANTLY.
I read this post just before leaving to a show last night, and picturing you falling asleep while Neko Case was going on and on about her period made me grin like an idiot for about twenty minutes.

Dude, you should take your BF with you and share the bed.
He wanted to go, actually (though I don't think bed-sharing was supposed to be an option), but I tried to reserve tickets for both of us and it turns out there is exactly ONE left. And now I'm torn between writing back and reserving that last ticket for myself, thus leaving him out (he says he's okay with it, and I'm sure that's true - not really his type of music, anyway), and just not going. Tough decision in need of being made quickly.

When I saw her at Cat's Cradle, the sound was fucking awful and most of her stage banter revolved around mocking the sound guy in a really dry, circuitous, cutting manner. I fell in love. Even still, her voice was gorgeous, she was gorgeous, everybody was mesmerized, great show.

Hahahaha she didn't talk about her period. The banter between her and Kelly Hogan is a little weird but hilarious.
So, her voice? Fucking amazing. There were moments when I'd close my eyes and swear I was listening to a CD, not watching her fifty feet in front of me. The lack of songs from
Furnace Room Lullaby
(zero) and
Blacklisted
(two, I think)? SUCKS. I'm still a little disappointed about that, but seriously, her voice.
I paid $25 for tickets but I don't go to shows anymore and I took my dad, so it was $25 well-spent.

Aw man! I would've been at that show, and I wouldn't have fallen asleep. I love Kelly Hogan!
And you know, I really ought to get around to buying her solo albums...

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see all of those bands, but holy fucking shit I am tired of this shit. Don't we trust bands to write their own fucking set list anymore? The whole "be our living jukebox" fan-service aspect of these "performing their classic album" sets just gets on my nerves more and more the longer it goes on. But I'll bet it'll get more prevalent rather than less, because most people think it's just peachy. Sigh.

relax...it's just 1 night out of 3. and i've seen the Stooges and Mudhoney twice before, and the Stooges have never played Raw Power material. and, the early Mudhoney kicks tons of ass. complaining about hearing 'search and destroy' and 'touch me i'm sick' is something i'm tired of hearing.

If you really think that's what I'm complaining about, you're missing my point. But you don't, you're just strawmanning me. Which I'm sure is fun for you, but should in no way be misconstrued as your actually having a valid point.

so you wouldn't want to hear osterberg play _Raw Power_? really?
my point is very valid. yours is too. we like different things. no way to prove either of us are correct.
i've seen a bunch of 'don't look back'-type sets and for the most part they are massively enjoyable. if you don't like it, don't go see it. i would be hard pressed to see a 'regular' set by most of the bands eclipse one of the ones you are railing against.

Why are you composing your posts with the calculated intent to piss me off? Does the fact that I disagree with you mean, in your mind, that I deserve to be insulted? You need to come down off your high horse a little bit and accept that not everyone sees things the same as you do, and what's more, that the existence of a disagreement between you and someone else does not make that other person stupid or worthy of mockery.

TSKS - I think you must be misreading him. I can't see any intent to piss you off here. I think you're assuming that he's dismissing your point altogether, when he's really just defending his own.

Strawman.

Repetition of strawman.

First three sentences in this quote appear to say that our differing opinions are equally valid. Final sentence, though, is an assertion that I'm wrong to feel the way I feel.
If narlus isn't trying to be a dick, then he's being a dick by accident and needs to be more careful. I think he's just trying to be a dick subtly, so that he can plead innocence if I call him out.
Whatever, I should know better than to expect respect or civility around here.

I mean, that's a pretty loose understanding of a strawman setup. As far as the second quote goes, it gets to be a pretty thin difference when you say you don't like the idea a strictly-programmed show, but you would like hearing the songs played in a strictly-programmed show.
From a different angle, who do you think sets the program here? If Mudhoney and the Stooges wanted to play whatever the fuck they wanted, do you think the ATP organizers would say no? Explain the ideal setlist-determination process.
edit: he said that he likes what he likes, and that you like what you like. Then he says, 'I like best what I said I liked up there.' How does that constitute an attack?

I don't specifically have a problem with hearing those songs, I just don't like the idea of everyone coming to the show already knowing what the setlist will be. That's not my idea of what a live show should be about.
It's a big ATP thing for bands to "play their classic album." I would not be surprised if organizers approach bands with requests for them to play whatever album in its entirety. I would be surprised to hear that a band were disinvited from a show if they weren't into doing so, so to that extent you have a point.
As for the strawman thing, if that's me being too specific, fine. Regardless of what specific logical fallacy is being used in narlus's posts, the end result is him talking down to me in a superior condescending tone that I don't appreciate. Generally, though, I find that snarky, superior attitudes get rewarded when expressed, so I suppose I should expect it.

It was really fucking cool when Oysterhead did Animals.
But I don't see any of the snark and condescension you're talking about. Ultimately narlus described what _he_ liked as something that _he_ liked, and acknowledged that it was probably not the same as what _you_ liked.
If you really think he took up a superior tone, and if you have a problem with that, I guarantee that I could find a post of yours within a minute with the same condescending attitude.

Which wouldn't prove anything. If I say something that bothers or offends someone, I'm always open to discuss it. The fact that I've made one or more mistakes at some point in the past doesn't mean that I have to take everybody's shit whenever they feel like dishing it out for the rest of forever.

I totally agree with Andrew that bands announcing that they'll be playing an album, in order, destroys a lot of the enjoyment of a live concert. I also agree with him that this doesn't necessarily mean he's saying 'Raw Power' would be unenjoyable to hear live, so I'm with himn on the Strawman argument too. Not so sure on the tone of narlus' posts though - I mean, I can see how this...

andrew, if you think i'm being a dick from what i posted, i'm a bit flummoxed.
your point - albums played in their entirety are something you don't like.
my point - my experience (which includes probably a dozen or so of these) is that it's a lot of fun, esp hearing songs that would *NEVER* be played as part of a set, ones that particularly resonate w/ you (cf Liz Phair playing 'Glory,' about the only reason I went to the _Guyville_ show).
my other point is that these shows tend to sell well, so yeah - it's a trend that will continue, for better or worse.
and my tone is snarky while yours is angelic?
again, i guess we'll agree to disagree.
back on topic, tonight i'll see Sonic Youth and the Feelies (who's set last time playing their debut was by far the best i'd seen 'em of the 3-4 times).
