You bet the ladies loved my sweet mullet
So I have a question. Back in the day, at least out on the left coast of Canada, in the heyday of this here hairstyle, I never heard the term "mullet". It was always hockey hair. I only started hearing the term "mullet" long after all the actual mullets had long ago left the arena. But it's the only term I hear for it now. Was it always a "mullet" down south where there is no proper appreciation of hockey culture? I want to know if I'm the victim of anachronism or of cultural imperialism here.
I'm gonna go with cultural imperialism
I agree, but here in the south they were called "shortlongs" until the late 90s, so it's probably just a regionalism from a different region than both of us hail from, which eventually took over.

My favorite thus far:
It's almost 2010 for crying out loud! If you still want to bleed animals in the name of whatever warped hocus pocus god you believe in then leave our country and go back to the jungle.

Yeah, MU330 (St. Louis ska band) sang a song called "Since the Short-Long's Gone" about a dude cutting his mullet

The mullet was known as a shlong in certain parts of the country! Not where I'm from--I never heard someone abbreviate the term in that way--but I definitely read it used that way. It was apparently also known as a shfillbee in certain areas, which is a phonetic pronunciation of SFLB, which stands for Short Front Long Back.

I always understood that the term mullet was popularized by the Beastie Boys, who were making fun of people with mullets. If that's the case, it would make sense that the hairstyle was already on the wane by the time you first heard it, ellaguru. On the other hand, the one or two serious hockey kids in my school maintained hairstyles similar to Uncle Jesse's from Full House, in spite of merciless insults.

In Miami in the 80's many many mullets ran free under the name "soccer hair."

I don't think it had a name here - I'll have to do a survey. Certainly I only started hearing the term here in the mid (?) 90s. It was a recognised hairstyle though...in fact I had one (of sorts) for a haircut or two in 1986.

I was joking about shlong! I have heard them called mudflaps, though.

The first place I ever heard the term was in the Grand Royal article about them, so that makes a ton of sense to me.
Also, B, I understand you were joking. I wasn't! "Shlong" was definitely used as a term for mullets somewhere in the US at some point!

Finally moved into the new house. For now, here are some "before" shots of our home makeover:
My house w/ the half-raked yard
Back of house w/ F
The living room as it was at time of move-in
Our bedroom
The carpeted kitchen
The very hazardous staircase to the attic/third bedroom
So as not to fry this board w/ giant photos: forthcoming, during and after shots!

I like those tiny handrails on top of the cabinets. Presumably so the kitchen elves don't fall off.

My mom's house had a carpeted kitchen, and at least one carpeted bathroom (I think the one with the bathtub wasn't, but the other one was) when we moved in. But that was in 1976, and all rooms were carpeted back then.

big fancy mansions along Maine Street
Apparently the corner of 18th and Maine was named one of the 10 most architecturally significant intersections in the USA by some fuckers*, I dunno. Here are 3 pictures from that corner
By way of comparison, here is the house I sold when I moved to Chicago, maybe 2/3 of a mile south of that corner
Moving west along Maine, here are several more fancypants houses, the first of which now houses the Quincy Museum
A few blocks away is the
John Wood Mansion
, built by one of the founders of Quincy and former Governor of Illinois (never jailed for fraud though AFAIK), John Wood.
Bonus shots from the riverfront
Bayview Bridge
Memorial Bridge
Quinsippi Island
These bars are underwater every time it floods, I'm not sure why somebody recently redid the one on the right, it's just going to get it again.
*some fuckers=National Geographic, I looked it up
