I met some nice gentlemen at the Sixpoint event last night and thought I might enjoy having a beer with them in the future and so asked them for their Twitter IDs. It was actually a really nice, non-invasive way of being like "Hey! Let's hang out some time"

Basically, I like Hootsuite because I can arrange the tweets in one column and my replies in another and schedule important update-type tweets to go out when most people are watching (i.e. noon, instead of 3am when most updates actually get posted.)

just learned today that my students have a specific hash tag (that's the # thing, right?) that they use for quoting me in tweets, which is kind of terrifying because I make a lot of off-hand, almost stream-of-consciousness asides that I'd mostly hate to see preserved anywhere. I think I need to train myself to trail off into mumbling about five clauses earlier than I already do as a way of combating this.

So the key to ignoring annoying people without unceremoniously unfollowing them is to make a list with the people you care about in it and just reading that, yes? (Assuming you're using a client that doesn't have the handy dandy "mute" function.)
