he peaced out rather quickly in a rarely-read thread.

Summary:

Andrew: I like Lady Gaga.

EVIL LPTJERS: She sucks.

Andrew: Why are you guys always teaming up on me?  I'm not going to post here anymore.

Pollo: *bites the jugular of a lamb and spit-takes lamb blood.

Don't forget the part where your brother implied that you're a naive hillbilly!

I would be interested in hearing TSKS' defense of the "Telephone" video.  While there's certain aspects of "Paparazzi" and "Bad Romance" that made me stabby, I could at least understand their appeal.  This shit is just... a fucking mess.

It seriously plays like Virgin Mobile wanted to come up with a Lady Gaga parody/trend-cash-in/knockoff commercial, as advertisers often do, but they somehow got Lady Gaga to actually star in it.

Ok, so I guess what I now appreciate about LG, post-Telephone, which before just didn't do anything for me, is that she's setting up all these sexy cliches -- lesbians in prison, mostly naked woman with electrical tape on her nipples, etc. and totally missing the mark on all of them. On purpose. I wouldn't say she's making a statement, but her aesthetic is intentional, deliberate. She's not just somebody trying to be sexy and fashionable, but failing because she's got bad taste. The cigarette sunglasses, the Klaus Nomi prison outfit, the weird Madonna-circa-Who's That Girl (if I am remembering my Madonna correctly) -- it's funny! At least to me it's funny. And I think it's supposed to be. Beyonce looking totally stunned -- I find that genuinely funny! She's either awfully good-natured and willing to take the piss out of herself, or she's somewhat stupid and doesn't get her own role in the video. This is joycore and if you hate fun and are borecore, then of course, it won't be enjoyable. This is not an attack on anybody, by the way, this is shorthand which I am hoping will be user-friendly and intuitive. It's perfectly ok to be borecore. That's got its own aesthetic.

It's hilarious! Sandwiches! I debased myself into watching E! News just to see its premiere (fortunately they played it right away and not at the end of the show, so I wasn't Seacrested Out.)

Defense? It's a music video!!! It's great, it got half naked ladies, 3 or 4 extravagant sets, mass murder, crazy costumes and dance moves, tarantino references, a few chuckles spread throughout plus it's pretty cool seeing the two biggest female pop stars together. really, if i want commentary i'll read an article. this is pop music and it only has one clear purpose: To get those hands-a-clappin', feets-a-stompin' and booty shakin'!

Right, sure, I won't hate if you wanna enjoy it, but TSKS wrote a trillion-word blog post about how Lady Gaga is Important, if you'll recall.

As I've said over and over in this thread, I've got no problem with Lady-Gaga-as-popstar.  In fact, I'm an active Widdle Monstah insofar as she's in direct competition, in the current marketplace, with the Taylor Swifts and Miley Cyruses of the world.

Where I get cranky is when people want to claim that barely-repurposed pr0n tropes are SHOCKING or HIGH ART or, worst of all, FEMALE EMPOWERMENT.  It'd be one thing if it was just TSKS being characteristically overenthusiastic, but this shit is the dominant media narrative, here.  And, you know, the founding principle of this thread.  I'd find little to hate about "Lady Gaga is fun!" or "Lady Gaga is hilarious!"  Girlfriend is many things, but "fascinating" is low on that list.

she definitely has more edge and grittiness going on than most pop stars and that's why it's fun watching what she'll do next and i guess that's what makes her fascinating. but as soon we're talking high art and female empowerment it's like who gives a shit. some may think that, some may not. there's no high art-o-meter.

and what's with the distinction of fun and good? if something is entertaining and you enjoy it. it's GOOD. it's like "hey, how was Avatar?"
"It was really fun"
"ok, so it was really good?"
"no, the dialogue was such cliche, it's a terrible film"
