I'd love to just once see a metal band rockin out on Danelectros or Rickenbackers (someone other than Lemmy) or like Univoxes or something.  That'd be kind of funny-lookin.

FT played with a damn fine band called The Witches Tit, and the lead guitar player played a dark-red hollow-body Telecaster.  That was kind of amusing.

Is that Matt Pike? Several years ago I heard that guitar equipment is the only thing that dude owns, and he lives in a squat when HOF isn't on tour. Him owning a guitar from Target would fit right in with that bit of mythmaking. As would his awful teeth.

it is pike.  yeah, his parents never consulted an orthodontist.  when i was looking @ some close up shots i took, i noticed that his crazy eye tooth action is on both sides.

still, a fair amount of people seem to be using first act guitars.  in the last year i've seen:

kylesa (bass player)
buttholes (pinkus)
converge (ballou)
mastodon (i think both kelliher and hinds)

I once read somewhere that they have a decent reputation when it comes to their custom-made guitars, but I could be full of shit.

I could see that.  It's just that their name is so synonymous with Toys 'R Us instruments, there's a fair bit of cognitive dissonance going on seeing their logo on shit like that double necked monster in the hands of these big sweaty dudes.

I've actually been wanting a crappy first act to abuse since I started seeing their full scale electrics on the shelves.

Nocturnal Graves ruled the other night. Played on the floor to probably 50 people, and ripped through about 10 tracks (mostly Satan's Cross songs + new stuff) in about 25 minutes. Best live metal band I've seen in some time.

Kurt Ballou also has a few Rickenbackers

Kurt has always been the "one of these things is not like the other" dude in that band. Even back when Aaron, Steve, and Damon were in that band, it was that way.

I love Times New Viking so much.  They sounded so fucking good last night.  The keys and guitar and drums were all clear and distinct.  The vocals were also abnormally audible even over all the noise, whether it was Beth and Adam singing in unison or alternating or whatnot.  They are so much what I want in a band, noisy, melodic, catchy, variable.  I had so much fun.

Before them were The Axemen from New Zealand - who were quite hilarious to watch - and the final show from locals Cardiac Party.

When I saw Times New Viking open for Deerhunter a while back, they had their own special sound guy to produce a super lo-fi live sound.

Has anyone seen one of the following bands live:
Krisiun
Tankard
Grave
Hail of Bullets
Hackneyed
Ulcerate
The Rotted
Dead Head

They play at a small metalmeeting in my town and Nile is there too, but I know what to expect from Nile. It's quite expensive though so I don't know if the bands above are worth it.

I've seen Krisiun. They bored me stiff. I've actually seen Krisiun twice, and I had to be reminded about both times. Totally unremarkable.

Yup, I saw Krisiun too, and I agree with that assessment. Their music isn't bad but they really didn't have anything to offer that stood out in a live setting.

Also, it didn't help that they followed Decapitated, who were the band we came to see, and were outstanding. After one Krisiun song, I turned to my friend that I rode with and was like "You wanna bail?" And he was like, "Yup."

Jesus Lizard, y'all.  Fuckin JESUS LIZARD.

Haven't been in a pit that crushing since the big metal fest at the Masquerade.  Elbows and pelvises all up in that shit.  I'm pretty sure I caught a handful of Yow's junk as he surfed overhead and I wanted to kinda assert myself in there, but man, you do not fuck with a bunch of guys with neck tattoos.

It was pretty much like what I expected the show to be like.  But I was still surprised that that Yow's still as crazy as he was a decade ago.  No nudity--he didn't even get out of his shirt--but he was sailing over top of us more often than not.  Dude is still frontman du jour.  The band was still lead pipe heavy and locked in together.   Yow said "That wasn't so bad" after nearly every song.  At one point he asked for a show of hands, how many people in the crowd had boners.  three songs later: "how many of you that had boners a while ago still have them?"  More hands than the first time.
Played two encores.  Even the security guy in front of the stage was getting into it by the end.

Excellent show.

Just got back from seeing Ponytail.  Damn dudes, they are a fantastic live band.  Singer is awesome and adorable and the band is spazztastic in all the right ways.  The kids ate it up.  Openers Abe Vigoda (great name) were very good as well.  I dug the guitar sound (looked like the lead guitar guy only had one effects pedal, which surprised me) and the drummer had an unconventional style that was fun to watch.   One of the best shows of the year for me, easy.  Totally worth the long-ass drive to the middle of nowhere.

I love Ponytail live so much.  I don't get the same from them on record but, live it's just so wonderful.

And Abe Vigoda are a great opener!

I picked up a copy of the LP at the show.  Even if it's only a quarter as good as they are live, I'll be satisfied.
