Hey, an LPTJ post that interests me! Thanks, boss. Gonna listen on the train tonight; I had no idea she was on RBR now.

Also gonna have to pull my copy of Grand when I get home.

It's a strange record from what I've heard. As the proper follow-up to We Will Become Like Birds, I am keenly interested, but her last few projects haven't made much of an impression on me.

At any rate, I'm excited to see her play in Athens at the end of the month!

Really loving this. Great headphones record; there are a lot of delicate, subtle things going on. Her voice remains as awesome as ever.

Ok, so I went in to the record store today to buy my ticket to the show tomorrow night, and it struck me: uh-oh, I have no idea how to pronounce her name and I'll look like a fool.

Luckily, I found out (before getting specific) that the store didn't sell tickets for this particular venue.

But still, how do you pronounce McKeown? I guess I've always said "McKown" (rhymes with "crown") in my head, but that "e" is there for a reason, right? I'm starting to think it might be McKoon or something.

My instinct would be to pronounce it like Mc-'cune', kind of rhyming with spoon.

Ending with a "-yune" sound?

That's how the McKeown I know has his surname pronounced.

That "mac-ye" bit is awkward.

Well, it's just somewhere between mac-cune and mac-yown.  It's not three syllables, I just put the e in because the vowel-ness of the y isn't completely lost.

You can probably get away saying something like 'mack-ewe-n'. I say it as a triphthong (/uəɪ/), but if that's more vowel than you're used to, just going 'ewe' (as in /uə/) should be fine.

So can I cheat and say something like Erin Mac-Ewan (as in, Ewan McGregor)?

I knew a McKeown in high school, and she pronounced her last name mc-KOW-en.

You should say it however you want and hope someone corrects you.

I mentioned a few days ago that I'd let her try and sell me on the new album at the show tonight. Well, she certainly did, and then some. I ended up buying Hundreds of Lions AND Grand at the merch table after the show. I don't know that I've ever bought two albums at a show before.

Anyway, I wrote a bit more about the performance here.

Hey, look at that! "A folk song I learned when I was a kid." Haha.

But during the show, that went right over my head. I knew she was doing something weird, but couldn't pin it down.

The camera filming that was at the table next to me. And the song she goes into was one of my requests!

Here was another highlight:

Erin McKeown - The Boats (Athens, GA)

Oddly, though, that guy seems to have posted almost everything she played from Sing You Sinners, and not much of the other stuff. Weird.
